City grants 12-year tax abatement to ZYNP
Assistant to supervisor resigns, seeks deputy director job
Library board to review survey
An automotive manufacturer
will make a substantial invest-
ment in Romulus and get a little
tax relief tohelpmake it happen.
The ZYNP International
Corp., which operates out of two
facilities in the city, will receive
a12-year tax abatement on a proj-
ect that will bring $35 million in
investment to the city as well as
about 150 new jobs. The city
council voted unanimously to
approve the abatement last
Monday night. The tax break will
keep the business in Romulus-
they had been considering anoth-
er site to consolidate and expand
operations.
"Their business is growing and
it's a good thing that they're work-
ing with the City of Romulus to
continue that growth so we can
provide more jobs," said Mayor
LeRoyBurcroff.
The company has been locat-
ed in Romulus since 2008. It is a
Tier 1 automotive supplier, man-
ufacturing things like cylinder
liners for GM, Ford, Navistar and
Cummins. They also provide
end-to-end supply chainmanage-
ment for Tier 2 automotive sup-
pliers. With an annual revenue of
$100 million, the company oper-
ates out of two sites, one on
Ecorse Road and another on
Hildebrandt Street. The plan is
to expand the facilities on
Hildebrandt to a world head-
quarters that will include $13
million in building upgrades that
is part of an overall $35 million
investment that will bring new
equipment to the facility, as well.
The 260,000-square-foot facility
will house manufacturing and
research/development services.
The new jobs will be available
within two years, said John
Holmes, a spokesperson for
ZYNP International.
"It's always a good thing when
new jobs comes to the communi-
ty," said Council President John
Barden. "We really appreciate
the staying power they've had
over the years."
The tax break will save the
company about $320,000 over 12
years.
Karin LaMothe has submit-
ted her resignation as executive
assistant to Van Buren
Township Supervisor Linda
Combs and submitted a letter of
interest in the job as deputy
director of the township
Downtown
Development
Authority.
LaMothe's letter of resigna-
tion was submitted on Oct. 13
and her last day of work as exec-
utive assistant to Combs will be
Nov. 13. This is the second time
LaMothe has resigned after
being hired by Combs as execu-
tive assistant in January of 2013.
Her promotion to deputy super-
visor in June of 2013 was contro-
versial and prompted discus-
sion by the township board of
trustees. Following that public
inquiry into the job title of
deputy supervisor, her title was
changed in August 2013 to exec-
utive assistant to the supervisor.
She resigned from that position
in September and that resigna-
tion was to have been effective
Oct. 18, 2013.
She agreed to stay on with
Combs a few weeks after that
resignation and since June has
been working with DDA
Executive Director Susan
Ireland for 16 hours each week,
a move approved by Combs.
Ireland is selecting a deputy
director for the DDA from a
field of applicants, now includ-
ingLaMothe.
LaMothe cited her workload
and family and religious obliga-
tions as reasons for the latest
careermoves.
Members of the Belleville Area District
Library Board of Directors are preparing a
survey of library users to help determine
their next move following voters' over-
whelming defeat of millage proposals last
August.
The new survey, said to be about six
pages long, will be reviewed and voted on
this month at the regular meeting of the
library board members. Voters defeated
ballot questions Aug. 5 asking for nearly a
mill to build a new library and another 1
mill for library operations. Plans were to
upgrade the existing community center in
Sumpter Township for a branch library
and build a new 45,000-square-foot facility
on Belleville Lake to serve Belleville, Van
Buren and Sumpter. Plans for the new
facility had been in the works for months
and were extensive and included meetings
with officials from all three affected com-
munities and increased public input. The
defeated millages would have been in
effect for 20 years, according to ballot lan-
guage.
The new survey includes questions
about the willingness of the public to pay
for a new library building. The surveys will
be anonymous, officials said. A computer
programwill be used to tally the answers to
the survey, if the content questions meet
with approval of the board members Nov.
18. If approved, the survey could be submit-
ted in the December library newsletter
although participants will be encouraged,
officials said, to complete the survey
online. The cost for access to the computer
programis estimated at $300.
Board members and Library Director
Deb Green were to receive advance copies
of the proposed survey to study prior to the
meeting thismonth.
Muffins for Moms
The Wick School community recently attended a breakfast to recognize students'
mothers. Students along with their mothers enjoyed muffins, fruits and beverages
before the school day began. Mothers in attendance were informed of upcoming
events at Wick Elementary, and calendars in the hallway were made available so
volunteers could be assigned to specific events coming up during the school
year. Samaira Searcy, left, a Wick student, Autumn Hayes, a Wick parent, Elijah
Searcy and Elisha Searcy, both Wick students, enjoy the event.
