Township honors
Olympic champion
Northville voters
limit ballot choices
Hundreds of well-wishes con-
gratulated Olympic Gold Medalist
Allison Schmitt during a celebra-
tion Tuesday evening at the
HeritageParkAmphitheater.
The entire community celebrat-
ed Schmitt's five gold medal wins
as she was honored with a special
resolution by Canton Township
Supervisor Phil LaJoy.
The BeckRidge Choral sang the
United States National Anthem
and the the Pom Squad from
Canton High School, Schmitt's
alma mater, performed in her
honor. Commemorative miniature
flags and gold medals were distrib-
uted to well-wishers during the
rally.
Fresh from the official closing
ceremony, Schmitt will be spending
time in Canton with her family
before heading back to her senior
year of college. The 2008 Canton
High School graduate competed in
the 2012 Summer Olympics in
London July 27 throughAug. 12.
Considered one of the best mid-
dle distance swimmers in the coun-
try, Schmitt was a member of Team
USA for the second time, compet-
ing and medaling in five swimming
events at this year's Summer
Olympics.
Schmitt's first medal of the 2012
Olympics was the Bronze medal
earned for the U.S. Women's 400-
meter freestyle relay. Next,
Schmitt took home the Silver in the
400-meter freestyle. Schmitt won
Gold in the 200-meter freestyle set-
ting an American and Olympic
record. Schmitt earned two addi-
tional gold medals for the 800-
meter freestyle relay and one for
the 400-meter medley relay.
Schmitt previouslywon aBronze in
the 800-meter freestyle relay in
Beijing in 2008.
Schmitt, 22, was born in
Pittsburgh and currently resides
with her parents, Ralph and Gail
Schmitt, andher siblings inCanton.
She graduated from Canton High
School in 2008 and attends the
University of Georgia, where she
will return in the fall for her final
year ofNCAA swimming eligibility.
Canton Township voters did just
as expected last Tuesday and
returned three incumbents and a
former township supervisor to the
trustees' ballot inNovember.
Current Supervisor Phillip
LaJoy was unopposed in the pri-
mary, as was Canton Township
Clerk Terry G. Bennett and
TreasurerMelissaMcLaughlin.
Incumbent Trustee John
Anthony received 3,500 votes,
incumbent Pat Williams received
3,389 votes and Gregory
Demopoulos, who was appointed to
fill an unexpired term on the board,
received 3,154 votes.
Former Canton Township
Supervisor Thomas Yack was the
top vote getter, however, with a total
of 3,735 votes.
Former state representative
Deborah Whyman received 2,404
votes and Joseph Cafarelli received
1,858 votes.
Former Canton Township
Trustee Syed Taj received 9,778
votes in his primary campaign for a
seat in the U.S. Congress from the
11th District. He was opposed for
the Democratic nomination by
William F. Roberts who garnered
5,179 votes.
Taj will now face Republican
Kerry Bentivolio who received
30,424 votes in the primary election.
The primary election last
Tuesday in Northville eliminated
two candidates from the race for
supervisor leaving Robert R. Nix
as the candidate. Nix received
54.28 percent of the votes cast for a
total of 2,038 votes. His closest com-
petitor was Christopher Roosen
who received 40.89 percent of the
votes cast for a total of 1,533.
Edward F. Kriewall garnered 178
votes or 4.75 percent.
Township Clerk Sue A.
Hillebrand will be unopposed in
the election
Voters chose Marjorie F. Banner
as the candidate for township
treasurer by a margin of 51.32 per-
cent or 1,828 votes. Her opponent,
Karen Woodside, received 1,731
votes or 48.60 percent.
Trustee candidates on the ballot
will include Democrat Michael
Nolta who received 1,143 votes. He
will face Republican, Mindy
Herrmann who garnered 2,818
votes, Synantha Heath who
received 2,401 votes, Marvin Gans,
who received 2,191 votes and Fred
Shadko who received 2,122 votes.
The fifth Republican candidate on
the primary ballot, Michael
Kheibari received a total of 1,074
votes.
Only the top four Republicans
will be on theNov. 6 ballot.

Treasurer Ron Edwards, seek-
ing his fifth term, received 2,466
votes in the primary election last
week to defeat his opponent,
Edwin A. Schulz, who received
2,066 votes. Edwards will now be
challenged by Democrat Rita
White in the general election.
Democratic candidates for
trustee in November will include
Joanne M. Lamar, who received
1,132 votes in the primary election
andAlannaMaguirewho garnered
1,082 votes.
Results announced Tuesday
and now subject to the recount
indicate that the Republican can-
didates for trustee will include
Robert J. Doroshewitz who
received 2,368 votes followed by
Kay Arnold, the longest serving
member of the board, who
received 2,053 votes. Former
trustee Charles Curmi received
1,843 votes and Michael Kelly
received 1,799 votes.
First-time candidate Jennifer
Mann received 1,305 votes, Arthur
Butler garnered 1,298 votes, Sandy
Groth received 999 votes, Paul
Schulz got 715 votes and Andrew
Justus collected 673 votes. Don
Schnettler received 641 votes fol-
lowed by Christopher Hull with
613 votes, Mark Christenson with
580 votes and Janai Stepp with 371
votes.
Only the top four Republican
candidates for trustee, following
the recount totals, will vie for the
four open terms against the two
Democrats inNovember.
At press time, no date had been
announced regarding the request-
ed recount.
