The cause of a fire Aug. 5 at the
David C. Brown Funeral Home in
Belleville has been determined as
“electrical” by State Police investi-
gators, according toMarthaBrown.
The fire was reported at about 6
p.m. at the building at 460 E. Huron
River Dr. and firefighters from
Belleville, Romulus, Sumpter and
Van Buren townships responded.
The blaze was under control by 9
p.m. although firefighters were on
the scene until after 11 p.m. and
some as late as 1 a.m., according to
reports of the incident. The funeral
home remains open for business
despite the severe damage to the
rear of the building.
The Brown family was at a gath-
ering at their home across the
street from the business when they
heard an explosion and saw the
flames at the funeral home.
Brown said that fire investiga-
tors found that despite rumors that
the fire was caused by an unattend-
ed gas grill, the explosion came
from an area behind a room on the
ground floor of the building.
Brown’s daughter, ShellyWillick,
her husband and their four chil-
dren lived in the second-floor sec-
tion of the building that was com-
pletely destroyed. A fundraiser has
been planned for the family, who
lost everything in the blaze, from 4-
7 p.m. Aug. 25 at the Belleville
Moose Family Lodge. The $12
donation for a spaghetti dinner will
help replace the family's posses-
sions which were lost in the fire
which destroyed 30 percent of the
building and took the lives of their
two family cats.
Reports indicated that no one
was in the building at the time of
the blaze .
One firefighter was treated at a
local hospital and two others at the
scene for dehydration. No other
injurieswere reported.
The funeral home has been in
business in Belleville since 1974. It
was moved to the current location
in 1982.

A new drop box outside Romulus City
Hall allows residents to pay a bill or deliver
city correspondence without leaving their
car.
Mayor Alan R. Lambert said the conven-
ience is meant for residents - including sen-
ior citizens - who can now take care of busi-
ness any time of the day or night and week-
ends.
“Residents can drive up to the drop box,
insert their payment or letter and drive off,”
Lambert said. “This will assist residents who
don't want to make the walk from the park-
ing lot to City Hall and will help those who
happen to visit the municipal building after
hours or the weekend or when a department
is closed for the lunch hour. It's a real con-
venience.”
City Treasurer Stacy Paige, whose office
empties the drop box on weekdays, said the
box also comes in handy on poor-weather
days when residents want to pay bills but
don't want to get
out of their cars.
She cautioned
users not to
include cash
when paying a
bill.
L a m b e r t
credited the
idea to a city
employees' cost-
savings commit-
tee that was
formed to come upwithmoney-savings ideas
in light of the city's financial difficulties sev-
eral years ago.
Julie Wojtylko, the mayor's administrative
aide and a member of the committee, said
the group has come up with a number of
ideas that have been implemented to save
money. She said that the drop box is more of
a convenience than a money-saver and
should get plenty of use.
“Our city employees not only work hard,
but they're very creative,” the mayor said.
“This group has come upwith some wonder-
ful ideas to stretch taxpayer dollars while
improving services. On behalf of all Romulus
residents, I thank our employees for both
their teameffort and another great idea.”

millage expired in 2011.
