Gracin to headline Blues, Brews & BBQ
School board closes Tinkham alternative center
Awide selectionofprofessionalbarbeque specialists,
a long list of amateur grillers andhometownAmerican
IdolcontestantJoshGracinwill join thegrowingrosterof
participants andwell-known entertainers at the 6th
AnnualWestlandBlues,BrewsandBBQthisyear.
Theevent,whichdrawsalargecrowdfromthroughout
the area,will begin at 5p.m.Aug. 5 at theThomasH.
BrownCentralCityPark.Alongwith talentedmusicians,
AllAmericanBBQ and a selection ofMichigan craft
beers, theeventwill featureprofessionalpitmasters, the
traditionalBBQcompetitionandfreeshuttlebuses.
Proceeds from the eventhelp support several civic
andcharitablegroups in thecityandduring thepast five
years theeventhasgeneratednearly$150,000whichhas
goneback into the community in services and scholar-
shipsforstudents.
This year, theevent isplanned from 5-10p.m.Friday,
Aug. 5, and from 11 a.m.until 10p.m.Saturday,Aug. 6.
Parkingwillbefreeatthe18thDistrictCourt,JohnGlenn
High School, theWilliamD.FordCareerTechnical
Center onMarquette and at theWestlandFriendship
Center, located at 1119NewburghRoad. Free shuttle
buseswill beprovided from theMarquetteRoad and
FriendshipCenter locations from 7-10p.m.Friday and
from3-11p.m.Saturday.
This year, professional pitmastersHillBillyBone
BBQ,Heaven on aRoll,Stick aPig In It,HaroldOle
DaddyBBQ,SmokeRingBBQ andUncleBebe'sBBQ
will join the fun, offering their on-site, slow cooked,
authenticBBQ. Theywillbe joinedby returning local
favoritesFamousDave's,TexasRoadhouseandLonghorn
Steakhouse.
Inaddition, therewillbeHarvestKettleCorn,Detroit
MiniDonut andLemonade,HeavenlyHotDog andOn
theBorder to treat visitors' taste buds. As inprevious
years, the eventwill also feature awide selection of
Michigancraftbeers,andsoftdrinks. New thisyearwill
betheadditionofawineselection.
Some of themostnotableBlues acts in the areawill
appearFridaynight.DirtyBasementBlueswill take to
thestageat5:30p.m. followedby KennyParkerandJim
McCarty from7 to8p.m.and thenLil'Edand theBlues
Imperialswillentertainfrom8:30to10p.m.
The entertainment continues beginning at noon
Saturdaywhen the JeffHoaglandBandwillperform.
RoadsideRickand theBreakdownswillperform from2-
3:30p.m. followedbyDetroitBluesLegendswith theBoa
Constrictorsfrom4-6p.m.ThornettaDavistakesthestage
from6:30to7:30p.m.
The final act is the highly-anticipated return of
WestlandhometownAmerican Idol finalist JoshGracin
whowillperformfrom8to10p.m.
Also set forSaturday,Aug.6, is theAllAmericanBBQ
Throwdown,presented by theWestlandArea Jaycees.
The judgeswill crown theWestlandBBQChampion in
boththeprofessionalandamateurdivisionsanddifferent
specialty categories, such as ribs, chicken, pork and
brisket. Registration for the All American BBQ
Throwdownis$30andmoreinformationandregistration

As a part of theCity ofWestland 50thAnniversary
Celebration, theBlues,BrewsandBBQeventwill close
with the largest fireworksdisplay in cityhistory starting
at10p.m.Saturday.

mentedMayorWilliamR.Wild. “In addition tobeing a
funway to spend anAugustweekend, the goal of the
eventisthefundraisinggeneratedthroughfood,beverage

charities including theGoodfellows, theWestland
CommunityFoundation and theWestlandHistorical
Society. Proceeds from this event benefit local civic
organizations to support their charitablework locally in

The closinghasbeenunderdiscussion
by the district administration and board
members sinceMaywhen thenecessityof
closing thealternativehighschoolwaspre-
sented to the board by Assistant
Superintendent ofEducationalServices
JohnAlbrecht.Heexplained thatbuilding
maintenanceandrepair issues includinga
newroofandrepairsorreplacementofthe
boilerandairconditioningsystem.
Albrecht said that the infrastructure at
Tinkham had been a concern for some
time.He said thatheandSuperintendent
of SchoolsMicheleHarmala explained
thatmonetary limits on adult education
funding from the statewouldn'thelp the
issue.
Harmala said the proposal to close
Tinkham reduces a service in the school
district,particularly toadulteducationbut
that thedistrictneeded tocompetitivewith
staffingwages and control personnel
turnover.
SeveralTinkham students in the audi-
enceatthemeetinglastmonthwhenboard
membersmade the decision expressed
theirdisappointment in the closing of the
schoolasdidsomeeducatorsatthefacility.
Boardmembers expressed their reluc-
tanceinthedecisionbutnotedthatthedis-
tricthas lostabout$12millionandallpro-
gramshadtobeexaminedtoconsidertheir
viability.“Wehave tomake the toughdeci-
sionsuphere.It's thebestoptionwehave,”
said board treasurer Charles “Trav”
Griffin.Griffin said that the primary
responsibilityoftheboardanddistrictisK-
12education.
Harmalanoted that thecollaborationof
theboardmembers in thedecision toclose
the alternative schoolwas critical to the
district.
