Today, theSt.Paulcongregationsdraws
itmembers from of the downriver and
Dearborncommunities,but itwas initially
founded byGerman farmers settling in
Taylorduringthe1870s. Thecongregation
wasofficiallyorganized in 1882 andbuilt
its first church building on its present
GoddardRoad site that same year,next
door to the firstTaylorTownshipHall.
Therewas also a general store, sawmill,
andtavernjustastone'sthrowaway. After
being struck by lightning the firstwhite
frame church building burned down in
1911, thesameyear theTitanicsank. But
a brick churchwas promptly built to
replaceit. Thiswasfollowedin1948byan
even larger redbrickbuildingwhichwas
setback from the street to accommodate
thewidening ofGoddardRoad from two
tofivelanes.
Distinguished by its tall steeple and
bell tower, theColonialRevivalstyleofSt.
Paul's thirdandpresentbuildinghasbeen
maintained in the new addition,which
includes ahistoric stained glasswindow
preserved from awall that had to be
removed to create a new entrance.
Nothinghasotherwisechanged the interi-
or of the adjoining sanctuarywhichhas
beenkept traditional,making itaparticu-
larly attractive setting forweddings and
other special occasions, in addition to
Sundaymorningworship,churchofficials
said.
St.PaulChurch combines aLutheran
andReformedChristianheritageandwas
originallyknownas “St.PaulEvangelical
Lutheran Church” and “St. Paul
Evangelical andReformed Church.”
However, in 1958St.Paul, likeother con-
gregations of the Evangelical and
ReformedChurch,mergedwithanassoci-
ationofCongregationalChristian church-
es to form theUnitedChurch ofChrist.
Thenewchurch'secumenicalvisionofall
Christiansworking together isreflected in
its embrace of Jesus'prayer, “That they
mayallbeone.” Itappearsasamotto in
the emblem of theUnited Church of
Christ. More recently, theUnitedChurch
ofChrist has adopted a secondmotto,
“GodisStillSpeaking” “Forus,”Drutchas
said, “this is a onemore reminder that
God remains active in theworld today,
callingmen andwomen likeus to serve
himinthelovingspiritofJesusChrist.”
St. Paul members are active in
Christian service. During the 1950s, the
Penrickton Center for theBlindwas
organized in the church. Inmore recent
years, the congregationhas been instru-
mental in launching both theChristNet

CommunityFoodPantry,providingsignifi-
cant leadership and resources for both
communityministries. Every fall it is the

WAYNECOUNTYZOOLOGICALAUTHORITYRENEWALMILLAGE
TheWayne County ZoologicalAuthority was established pursuant to PublicAct 49 of 2008 and
formed to allow for continuing zoological services for the students, residents and visitors ofWayne
County. The law allows theAuthority to seek authorization from the electors to levy a tax on real
and personal property to provide revenue to an accredited zoological institution for this purpose.
Accordingly, as a renewal of the previously approvedmillage authorizationwhich expireswith the
2017 tax levy, to continue providing zoological services to benefit the residents of theCounty, shall
the 0.1mill (10 cents per $1,000 of taxable value) on all of the taxable property locatedwithin the
County continue to be imposed for a period of ten (10) years, being years 2018 through 2027? It is
estimated that if approved and levied, thismillagewould generate approximately $3,940,066.55 in
2018. Shall this proposal be adopted? YES [ ] NO [ ]
