Civitans award scholarships
To the editor:
The Westland Civitan Club held
its annual summer dinner meeting
on June 21 at Mr. Mike's Grill on
Wayne Road in Westland. As is our
custom, we invited the winners of
our scholarship awards to be pres-
ent at the meeting. This year was
also special since this was our 35th
anniversary of serving the commu-
nity of Westland and the first time
we included Vocational Tech stu-
dents for scholarships.
For those who don't know about
Civitan, we are a civic group that
primarily deals with the physically
and mentally challenged citizens of
the community. We help with many
projects in the community and are
an international organization.
Three of the four recipients of
the scholarship funds were present
at the dinner, along with some of
their parents and friends. The
fourth recipient could not be pres-
ent because of previous commit-
ments. Each year we give four
scholarships to deserving students
of the Westland community, two to
John Glenn High School students
and two to Vocational Tech
Students. It was interesting to hear
what these students had done to
earn these scholarship funds. Parts
of the essays they wrote were read
during the dinner, and each of
them present had a chance to
speak. It was fascinating to hear
what these students had to say and
to hear what they plan on doing in
the future. They were well deserv-
ing of the gifts. We also heard about
the missing student and what she
has accomplished so far is out-
standing.
The winners of the scholarships
were Aaron McClendon, Erica
Wilson, Steven White, and Izabella
Birsanescu, who could not be pres-
ent because of previous commit-
ments.
Also present at this meeting
were several charter members of
the club. They are all still active in
the club even though two of them
havemoved fromthe area.

To the editor:
On Saturday, June 29, the Van
Buren Township Fireworks display
attracted residents from the entire
township and surrounding commu-
nities. The Beck Road ball fields
were packed, as were the parking
lots at McBride Middle School and
Quirk Park. As always, our Public
Safety Department did a fantastic
jobwith traffic and crowd control.
After four years' hiatus, this
event was made possible by the fol-
lowing generous corporate spon-
sors, whose donations also paid for
all employee staffing: Waste
Management, Belleville Square
Shopping Center, Ashley Capital,
Sovereign Partners (Grace Lake),
Environmental Quality (EQ), Exel
Supply, Rose Moving & Storage,
Wade Trim and one anonymous
donor.
Many residents have expressed
their appreciation for bringing this
free family event back to the com-
munity. My sincerest thanks to all of
the sponsors for making it happen!
Thanks also to Jennifer Wright,
Jennifer Zaenglein and the Parks
and Recreation staff for making all
of the arrangements. Everyone
had a great time!

Candidate thanks supporters
To the editor;
Today I want to thank all that
have helped me out by signing a
nominating petition when we
arrived at your door. It is difficult
forme to say, but this campaignwas
not able to gain traction and pro-
duce enough of the proper signa-
tures to continue and place my
name on the ballot as a candidate
formayor of Romulus.
Although this candidacy was
small in comparison, and myself
being the relative unknown, I feel
that the conversations we had pro-
duced many things that need to be
discussed in this year's race. It is
my hope that those who have been
able to complete the necessary
steps to continue forward will be
able to address the same issues. As
I have stated many times before,
while each of us who have made
the choice to run for office have dif-
ferent ideas to move our city for-
ward, the ideas our citizens have
mean just as much to driving
Romulus forward as any candidate
or elected officialmay have.
As I look toward the future, both
personally and in our city, I ask that
each voter keep an open mind and
truly vet all candidates for all posi-
tions. Please do not immediately go
for the name you recognize or the
face you know, but cast your vote
for the issues you care about, and
the person you feel best suited to
act upon those issues.
Once again, I would like to thank
all those who have taken the time
to speak withme and help with our
petitions. Perhaps in the future,
with the right ideas and support,
there will be another chance to
serve our city for I know I look for-
ward to the upcoming elections
and what the future holds both for
me personally and for the City of
Romulus.

CivicConcern says thanks
To the editor;
Northville Civic Concern would
like to thank families in the
Northville Schools for their contin-
ued support during the 2012-2013
school year. Special thanks are
given to those schools that went
beyond their selected/assigned
food drive months to help us with
special projects this school year,
such as Amerman's Feed The Bus
and Silver Springs' Michigan vs.
Michigan State events. The Spirit
Drive Competition between Meads
Mill and Hillside last fall also was
also very successful. Thanks to all
the school groups that asked sup-
porters to bring in food to special
events as part of an admission
price. Thanks to all the students
and school groups who helped in
sorting, dating and shelving dona-
tions throughout the year. It is
because of this support that we are
able to provide food and other tem-
porary services to over 190 clients
and their families.
We are asking you to remember
us during the summer break
because hunger does not take a
"vacation". Donations of non-
expired groceries can be dropped
off at the Civic Concern office at
43261 W. Seven Mile in the
Highland Lakes Shopping Plaza on
Monday, Wednesday and Friday
between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. During
other times, donations may be left
at Cassel's Restaurant or at
Worldwide Alterations also in the
Highland Lakes Shopping Plaza.
In addition, donations are accepted
at the UPS Store, Genitti's, and The
Great Harvest Bread Company in
downtown Northville. You may
also drop off donations at
NorthvilleCityHall.
We accept gas gift cards and
monetary donations as well. You
can call (248)344-1033 for further
information. Thank you for any
support you can provide during the
summer months. May all of you
have a safe and healthy summer
break!

Chief thanks civic fund
To the editor;
Van Buren Township Fire
Department personnel is commit-
ted to educating the public about
the perils of fire and ways to pre-
vent a fire fromoccurring.
One way that the fire depart-
ment had been effectively teaching
school age kids about fire safety
was through the hands-on interac-
tive experience of its smoke house.
For the past fewyears, due to finan-
cial issues, the line item for Fire
Prevention has been the first to go -
being reduced to virtually nothing.
Due to lack of funding, the smoke
house sat unused in the back park-
ing lot.
It was disheartening to be
unable to provide fire safety educa-
tional programming, especially
when we received frequent calls to
bring out the smoke house for spe-
cial events by the schools and
neighborhood homeowner associa-
tions.
In the interest of reviving the
public educational fire safety pro-
gramming, I tasked the fire depart-
ment staff with evaluating repairs
required to bring the smoke house
back to safe standards. A thorough
inspection of the smoke house
revealed it was in a lot worse shape
than originally thought. It needed
some work just to allow people to
enter it, much less allow any chil-
dren through it!
After obtaining estimates to
refurbish the smoke house, I con-
tacted the Van Buren Civic Fund,
which graciously donated the fund-
ing to restore it to "as good as new."
I cannot thank them enough for
their generous donation to restore
the smoke house so we can re-
establish our fire safety program
here in the community.
With deepest respect on behalf
of the Van Buren Township Fire
Department,
Daniel C. Besson

We would like to take the oppor-
tunity to sincerely thank all who
helped with the Belleville High

The kindness and support of
many including the Belleville
Drycleaners, Graduate Services
and Meijer's in Belleville was so
greatly appreciated. Thank you
again for supporting our students.
