Area youths have the opportu-
nity to learn from sports 'legends'
next month during a free basket-
ball camp in Inkster.
Once again this year, the
Inkster Legends will offer the
free basketball camp for both
boys and girls from9-16 years old.
This is the 20th year the organi-
zation has presented the camp
which offers free instruction in
the basic skills and fundamentals
of the game including shooting,
passing, rebounding anddefense.
This year, professional basket-
ball star AlexLegion, who attend-
ed the Legends camp as a stu-
dent in the 10-16 year-old group,
is expected to be on hand to offer
instruction. Legion is now play-
ing professional basketball in
Italy, noted Inkster Legends
President FredSmiley.
The camp will take place
Friday, Aug. 4 and Saturday, Aug.
5 at the Booker Dozier
Recreational Complex, 2025
Middlebelt Road in Inkster,
about 1/3 mile north of Michigan
Avenue.
The players will be divided
into two groups with instruction
for ages 9-12 taking place at 7:30
a.m. and at 12:30 p.m. for those
players 13-16 years of age.
Registration deadline for the
free camp is July 15 and applica-
tions are now available at the
Inkster Recreation Complex,
Westland John Glenn High
School, Robichaud High School
and at the Romulus Athletic
Center. The applications should
be returned to the school where
they were obtained or to the
Inkster recreation complex.
Smiley said early applications
are welcome so that organizers
can have an estimated count of
the of historic Legends shirts
which will be provided to each
student. He added that all appli-
cants will be contacted by phone
theweek prior to the camp.
Parents are responsible for
transportation for students to
and from the camp. Students
should be picked up from the
recreation center from the morn-
ing sessions at 12:30 p.m. and
from the afternoon sessions at 5
p.m.

Wayne Main Street is seeking commu-
nitymembers interested in serving on var-
ious committeeswithin the organization.
Wayne Main Street is a group dedicat-
ed to building a revitalized and vibrant
downtown Wayne. The mission of the
group is to work with
community members,
businesses and property
owners to preserve,
enhance and promote
the historic Wayne
downtown as a destina-
tion for residents to gath-
er, shop, work and enjoy.
Maxwell Cameron of
Wayne Main Street said
the group takes a com-
prehensive approach to
community revitaliza-
tion with programs
designed to improve vacant and dilapidat-
ed properties, assist businesses to prosper
andbeautify the community.
Currently there are openings on the
design, business empowerment, organiza-
tion and promotion standing committees,
Cameron said.
The design committee undertakes proj-
ects that promote physical improvements
and the preservation of the historic fabric
of downtown while the business empow-
erment committee members work with
business owners and downtown stake-
holders to strengthen and diversify the
downtown economic
base.
The organization com-
mittee members work to
leverage resources and
help create a shared
vision and goals for
downtown Wayne while
the members of the pro-
motions committee work
to market downtown as
the center of commerce,
culture and community
life inWayne, he added.
The committee mem-
bers commit to attending monthly meet-
ings and are expected to participate in
programs and events. Cameron said the
monthly commitment for a committee
member can vary, but the average time is
between four and eight hours amonth.

Where leaders are created
Wayne Memorial High School sophomore Maddie Simmons created a Pennies
for Pets project as part of her Champions goal. Champions of Wayne is a mentor-
ing program that pairs a student with a staff member at Wayne Memorial High
School. Each semester the student and mentor devise a goal for the student to
work toward. Most often the goal is to increase the students GPA, but students
with high GPAs are encouraged to come up with a different goal. Simmons
decided she wanted to complete a Community Service project to benefit the
Michigan Humane Society in Westland. She contacted schools in Wayne-
Westland to see if they would be interested in having a penny collection box in
their offices or classrooms. There were 118 classes in Wayne-Westland that par-
ticipated in raising $1835 for the Michigan Humane Society in Westland through
Simmons' program. Students and staff from Adams, Marshall, Edison, Graham,
Hamilton, Hicks, Schweitzer, Wildwood, Franklin and Stevenson donated to the
effort. Simmons collected the pennies, counted them and presented a check to
the Michigan Humane Society. Nikki Hintz, animal resource center manager, said
the donation will help cover the cost of care for the animals at the center.
