“Years ago, I started writing poetry
because it gave me a creative platform to
voice my thoughts. In college, I started
going to poetry open mic nights in Detroit,
library poetry readings, and writer's con-
ferences. I performed at the Charles H.
Wright Museum, The Key Club, Sweet
Lorraine's and other venues,” she said.
Morris-Wilson and her husband, Khandi
Wilson, now live inDearborn.
She said that now she often uses the
rhythms of her parents' music in her writ-
ing.
“I like to play with different sounds and
words in writing. Recently, I wrote a trib-
ute poem to my late father, who passed
away several years ago,”
That poemMemories of My Father was
one of those recently published in Lyceum
Fine Arts and
L i t e r a r y
Journal.
“Like
the
music we lis-
tened to on our
car rides home
from the gym, I
think a lyrical
quality can be
heard in my
poem. It cap-
tures the spe-
cialness of our
bond,” she said.
“As I continue to write, one thing that I
know for sure is thatmy poems are birthed
out of childhood memories, kinship, per-
sonal identity, and my connection to my
community.”

ballot, which could also help in audits of
election results.
“This is something new,” Craig-Bragg
said. “The challenge is that you have dif-
ferent counties with these three vendors
that will have three different voting sys-
tems. Implementing them on a county
level-there's someunknowns there.”
The new machines will be used in the
Aug. 8 primary election this year.
“The new equipment offers voters all
the speed and convenience of the latest
ballot-scanning and election-night report-
ing technology while at the same time fea-
turing a good, old-fashioned paper ballot
that we can always go back and look at if
we need to,” Johnson said in a statement.

Sign of the times
Roger Staten of the Romulus Department of Public Works shows off the wooden
frame he built, treated and stained to protect the new Romulus Animal Shelter
sign. Councilman William Wadsworth, who has spearheaded the efforts at the
animal shelter, said that Staten built the frame from scrap wood and installed
glass on the sign to protect it from the elements. Two signs were donated to the
city shelter by Keith Johnson of Johnson's Lithographs and the weather had start-
ed to wear one of them. Staten, a 20-year city employee, is a heavy equipment
operator with the city. "He just did a tremendous job," Wadsworth said.
