In an effort to balance the deficit budget,
Wayne City Council members approved a
plan last week to close several sections of the
Wayne Community Center, which receives a
$1million annual subsidy fromthe city.
According to Wayne-Westland Parks and
RecreationDirector Nathan Adams, however,
the closures are not confirmed as city is wait-
ing for two proposals from private organiza-
tions to assumemanagement of the communi-
ty center and the ice rink. The plan council
members approved would include the clo-
sure of the Wayne Activities and Banquet
Center, the Senior Department and the
Patrick Norton Recreation Exercise Club and
the ice arena. All will close June 30 if there is
no outside proposal accepted, Adams said.
The pool will remain open andAdams said
the staff would move some exercise equip-
ment into a nearby observation area for use
by thosewho formerly used the exercise room
in the community center.
Adams said he is telling everyone con-
cerned “not to panic and to sit tight for the
month of April. What we'll be doing will
becomemore clear inMay.”
The city council members will have a bet-
ter grasp of the possibilities and “what they
want to do” when the private investors or
entities make their proposals regarding the
community center and the ice arena, Adams
said.
“We need to get the information and per-
formour due diligence,” he said.
The Senior Center would reopen using
funding from federal Community
Development Block Grant allocations avail-
able in the 2014-15 budget. That funding
would make the Senior Department self-sus-
taining beginning inApril, Adams said.
