Development at the site of
the former Westland City Hall
and some adjoining property
will be controlled by city offi-
cials.
Members of the city council
approved a plan to market the
12.5 acre site on Ford Road
which includes the site of the
former city hall, the Bailey
Recreation Center, a fire station
and a building the city pur-
chased last year. Both the city
hall building and recreation
center are expected to be
demolished within the next few
weeks.
According
to
Bruce
Thompson, the director of plan-
ning and building for the city,
the Downtown Development
Authority has hired McKenna
Associates to help with the sale
of the land. Thompson, Mayor
Bill Wild and City Council
President James Godbout com-
prise the Property Disposition
Committee and the council
approved a recommendation
from them to begin to actively
market the land which is near
Carlson.
In response to questions from
some members of the city coun-
cil, city attorney James Fausone
explained that the approval of
the marketing effort does not
impact control of the land. He
assured the council members
that the city would maintain
control of the property and does
not have to sell the site to any-
onewhomaymake an offer.
"The city ultimately controls
the site," he told the council
members during their meeting
last week.
The property is currently
zoned for office/business which
could be somewhat restrictive
since there has been discussion
of recreation use at the site,
according to Thompson. He also
explained that the site does not
include the parking lot used by
the 18th District Court. He sug-
gested that a zoning change
could be made and even a
shared parking arrangement
negotiatedwith a developer.
Students at the Burger Baylor School
in Inkster had some very special visitors
last week.
StateRep. JuliePlawecki (D-Dearborn
Heights) hosted legislators from around
the state on a tour of the school for stu-
dents with autism. Her guests included
State Rep. Frank Liberati (D-Allen Park)
and state Senator Rick Jones (R-Grand
Ledge), co-chairs of the legislative
Disabilities Awareness Caucus. The legis-
lators attended the tour to learn more
about the use of restraint and seclusion
in special education center based pro-
grams, according toPlawecki.
“It was a great experience having leg-
islators and staff from around the state
come to my district for this very informa-
tive tour,” said Plawecki. “After introduc-
ing this legislation, they were able to
again see how these policy changes
would impact schools. This is a very
important part of the legislative process,
and I commend them for attending this
tour.”
“The use of restraint and seclusion is
an incredibly sensitive issue. The reforms
we are proposing could have some fairly
large implications on all Michigan
schools,” said Liberati. “So before we
make changes to the bills, Senator Jones
and I wanted to make sure that we were
aware of the challenges that staff mem-
bers face in the classroom. In my mind,
this package is about the balance
between safety and a student's dignity.”
The Special Education Reform Task
Force, chaired by Lt. Governor Brian
Calley, recommended reforms to the gov-
ernor last month. Included in the recom-
mendations were restrictions on the use
of restraint and seclusion to specified
emergency situations. Liberati and Jones
are currently working on a package of
bills that would put the recommenda-
tions of the task force into action.
After advancing through two phases of
online competition, the Wayne Memorial
High School Junior Reserve Officer
Training Corp (JROTC) Leadership Team
composed of Coach Sgt. First Class
Stanley Lewis, Cadets Makayla Carpenter,
Ian Baker, Ryan Carney, Jeremy Harper,
Denisia Thompson and Samantha
Tillman will compete in person at the
championship event in Washington, DC.
The 2016 Army JROTC Leadership Bowl
Championship will take place on the cam-
pus of The CatholicUniversity of America,
June 24-28. This event is sponsored by the
Army JROTC and is conducted by College
OptionsFoundation.
The Wayne Memorial JROTC team
earned top scores out of the 1,378 teams
from around the world that competed and
placed first in the Region of 7th Brigade
(Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky and
Tennessee). The team is one of only 40
Army JROTC Leadership Bowl teams in
the nation to advance to the National
Leadership Bowl competition, which
includes an all-expense paid trip to the
championship event in DC. During the
two fast-paced preliminary rounds, cadets
were tested on their knowledge of current
events, leadership values, and leadership
skills.
The JROTC Leadership and Academic
Bowl (JLAB) is a nationally recognized
competition created exclusively for
JROTC students. By participating, cadets
learn the values of citizenship, academic
competition, and college opportunity. The
competition creates opportunities for
JROTC cadets by allowing them to demon-
strate leadership and academic abilities,
according to a spokesperson.
College Options Foundation is a non-
profit organization dedicated to enriching
the academic development of high school
students and assisting them in their
preparation for higher education.
Using academic competitions, college
examination study guides, college admis-
sions tutorials and personalized counsel-
ing, College Options Foundation has
assisted JROTC cadets worldwide for
more than a decade.
