County, cities plan marshmallow drops
Electronic waste accepted
Mayoral term may change
Fluffy white marshmallows will drop
from the sky at 10 a.m. in Attwood Park in
Wayne and again at 11 a.m. March 29 at
NankinMills inWestland.
Both events are free. Cross Pointe
Community Church and the Wayne-
Westland Parks and Recreation
Department are sponsoring the 10 a.m.
event and the Wayne County Parks
Department is organizing the second event
at 11 a.m.
The event at Nankin Mills will include
the drop of more than 20,000marshmallows
from a helicopter to the eager delight of
thousands of children from throughout the
area , who every year scramble to collect
the goodies and trade them in to receive
prizes. Children will be divided into age
groups, to ensure that everyone has an
opportunity to fully participate.
"I look forward to Marshmallow Drop
every year," said Wayne County Executive
Robert Ficano. "It makes me happy to see
families having a great time, creating spe-
cial memories together in our Wayne
County Parks."
The Wayne County Parks Marshmallow
Drop is co-sponsored by Trenton Parks and
Recreation, ITC Holdings and Taylor Ford.
This event is the first of several events
plannedbyWayneCounty Parks for 2013.
Nankin Mills is located 33175 Ann Arbor
Trail,Westland, MI 48185.
For additional information on this or any
other Wayne County Parks event, call (734)
261-1990.
In Wayne, there will be three drops this
year. The first will be for walking toddlers
up to age 4 and for children with disabili-
ties. The second drop will be for children
ages 5-7 and the third reserved for children
8-10 years old.
Following the Attwood Park
Marshmallow Drop, the Wayne Westland
Recreation Department will host the
Annual Bunny Breakfast from 10:30 a.m.
until noon. The event will take place at the

Voters in Wayne will be asked to alter the
city charter allowing the mayor to serve a
four-year term.
The charter revision question is expected
to be on the ballot inNovember, when voters
will choose three council members and the
mayor. The four-year terms of Mayor Pro-
tem Pamela Dobrowolski and Councilman
James Henley will expire as will the term of
Councilman James Hawley who was
appointed to fill the balance of Donna
McEachern's four-year term.
The city charter provides for four-year
terms for all council members, with a two-
year termfor themayor.
During discussion of the question,
Dobrowolski said that some members of the
council felt that, “The mayor is unable to
accomplish their goals in two years. We
would like it on a future ballot to make it a
four-year term”
Councilman Skip Monit commented that
newly elected mayors can be unfamiliar
with the actual duties of the office and the
two-year term left little time for action fol-
lowing the “learning curve.”
Councilman Al Damitio was also in favor
of the change. “It takes four years to make
changes and improvements,” he said. “When
the council serves four years, it (the two-year
mayoral term) doesn'tmake sense.”
Council members instructed the city
attorney to draft the ballot question lan-
guage.
As part of its ever-expanding
Mission:Green initiative, the City ofWestland
now provides a permanent collection site for
area residents, businesses and schools to
drop off old electronics.
The drop-off site is located at the
Westland Recycling Center at 37137
Marquette. No large appliances can be
accepted such as air conditioners, stoves or
refrigerators and no hazardous waste or
items containingmercury.
The center has now gone single-stream
like the city award-winning curbside recy-
cling program.
Children scramble to gather some of the 20,000 marshmallows dropped from a helicopter
during the Wayne County Marshmallow Drop at Nankin Mills last year.
Wayne mayor pro
tem will not run
Wayne Mayor Pro-Tem Pamela
Dobrowolski will not seek re-election to
the city council inNovember.
Dobrowolski made her announcement
at the end of the Wayne City Council
meeting last week. She said that she
wanted to let people know now, before
theMay 14 filing deadline for the election.
Dobrowolski has been on the council for
about 20 years, she said. She was original-
ly appointed to fill the unexpired term of
the late TomKelly who left the council in
1994 to serve as a state representative.
Dobrowolski praised her fellow coun-
cil members as “awesome” but said that
she felt having a woman's voice on the
body was important. She is currently the
only woman serving in that capacity in
Wayne.
You can stay too long and get stagnant,”
she said. “You need to move forward and
let younger people take over with fresh
ideas.”
Dobrowolski is currently a legislative
aide to Wayne County Commissioner
Kevin McNamara, D-Belleville. She pre-
viously retired from Wayne County. She
and her husband, Tom, have five daugh-
ters and 14 grandchildren.
