The family of the late Nikki Spicer Kuta
thanked the community for the outpouring of
support during a March 2 fundraising pan-
cake breakfast at Romulus Community
UnitedMethodist Church.
As many as 250 individuals attended the
breakfast, generating more than $4,000.
Shelby Spicer, one of Mrs. Kuta's half-sisters,
said the money will go to pay medical and
other bills that were not cleared when Mrs.
Kuta passed away.
“We just want to thank the community for
everything they did - for showing up and
donating and helping our family tremen-
dously,” Spicer said. “It doesn't matter how
much you donated. It truly helps. Even
though we don't know all of them, my entire
family says thank you.”
Nikki and Justin Kuta had been together
since 2009 and were married for 13 months.
Nikki Kuta learned she had cancer four
months after daughterEmmalynnwas born.
Justin and Emmalynn, now 2-years-old,
were present for the breakfast. Spicer said
her brother-in-law was moved to tears upon
learning howmuchwas donated.
“Justin is a strong guy, but he is so thankful
for everyone that came,” Spicer said.
The breakfast was planned by Spicer, her
twin sister, Shannon, and three of their
friends since childhood: Mary Ann and
SheilaWatts and theWatts' cousin, Cheyenne
Oakley. Oakley is the daughter of 34th
District Court Judge Brian A. Oakley. The
Watts sisters areOakley's nieces.
Mrs. Kuta's mother, Gracie Spicer, and
stepmother Barb Burtch were among those
onhand for the fundraiser.
The breakfast was presentedwith support
from the Community Assistance Foundation,
perhaps better known as CAF5, a charitable
non-profit 501(c)3 organization that was set
up in 2000 to assist needy families with
school-age children in the five communities
served by the district court: the cities of
Romulus and Belleville and the townships of
VanBuren, Huron andSumpter.
Oakley, who is president of CAF5, said the
original plan was to hold the fundraiser in
the summer.
“Unfortunately, Nikki died before we
could have the breakfast,” he said. So the
group moved the fundraiser from the sum-
mer toMarch.
He said the five friends did the legwork.
Supplies were all donated. The morning of
the breakfast, Oakley and the Watts sisters
served the pancakes, sausages and bever-
ages. Shelby, Shannon and Cheyenne
cleaned the tables inbetweendiners.
“There were a lot of people, but they
flowed right through,” Shelby Spicer said.
“Nobody had towait.”
“It was phenomenal,” Oakley said. “We
had a tremendous turnout. Nikki's death was
a tragedy, but this was an awesome show of
support.”
Among those supporting the breakfast
were members of Northbrook Church in
Carleton.
This was not the first time CAF5 assisted
someone in the family. Oakley said one of
the group's first major fundraisers was for
Shannon Spicer, who had leukemia when
she was 9 years old. Spicer has since been
cured of the disease.
Several years later, when Shannon,
Shelby, Cheyenne and Mary Ann were in the
seventh grade at Romulus Middle School,
they remembered each other from the
fundraiser and have been close friends ever
since.
Those interested can still make donations
to Mrs. Kuta's family. Donations can be
dropped off to CAF5 treasurer Ken Brooks at
the 34th District Court at 11131 Wayne Road
inRomulus.
Donations also can be made through
PayPal at http://caf5.webs.com.

Belleville man accused of internet bomb threat
Alexander Boyar, 48, of
Belleville is facing federal
charges of threatening to blow up
an elementary school.
The federal charges filed in
U.S. District Court recently claim
that Boyar used an interstate
communication facility to threat-
endamage by using an explosive.
Boyar worked at University of
Detroit Mercy as an IT network
manager. Investigators allege that
comments threatening to blow up
an elementary school came from
Boyar's college computer. He has
allegedly admitted that he posted
the threat.
The federal crime carries a
sentence of up to 10 years in
prison if Boyar is convicted.
According to the complaint
filed by the U.S. Attorney's Office,
Novi police responded Jan 8 to a
call froma concerned parent with
a student at Thornton Creek
Elementary School. The school is
located on Nine Mile Road and
has been on lockdown earlier in
the day.
The parent said she sawa com-
ment on the WDIV-TV website
threatening to blow up the school
as she was looking at a news
account of the earlier situation.
“Hello? Thornton Creek
Elementary School? Hi. You're a
bunch of doo-doo heads. And I'm
going to blow up the school today
with giant TNT bomb and those
big round black balls with the
long fuse sticking out and I'm
going to have a bunch of dynamite
and hand grenades and gasoline
and trucks and stuff. You need to
cancel the math test in Mrs.
Klydeschlupel's class or I'll do it. I
swear.”
The message was signed Mr.
Melliflouus, according to the com-
plaint.
Police identified the Internet
Provider address for Boyar at the
university and he was subse-
quently interviewed Jan. 9. He
allegedly told investigators that he
had posted the message. He was
arrested and charged by federal
authorities.
No trial date has been sched-
uled.
