Black History Month was officially
celebrated with multiple events
throughout the City of Romulus in
February including an Appreciation
Breakfast and a Black History bus tour
of the area.
Mayor LeRoy D. Burcroff and the
members of the city council issued an
official resolution and proclamation
marking the celebration for the second
consecutive year.
The Appreciation Breakfast took
place Feb. 22 at the Romulus Athletic
Center with a record turnout of more
than 110 people. The gathering also fea-
tured a special tribute video with inter-
views fromsome of the oldest black resi-
dents in the community and perform-
ances from Romulus High School stu-
dents. Distinguished Community
Service awards were presented during
the breakfast to Emery Long, a lifelong
Romulus resident, Rotarian and volun-
teer; the Rev. Rita Talley who is the
associate pastor at First Baptist Church
and who has been a Romulus School
District employee for more than 30
years, and Willie B. Watson, a former
City of Romulus employee and involved
resident. Also honored was St. John's
Lodge No. 44 of the Free and Accepted
Masons, Prince Hall Affiliation where
members have been active in the com-
munity since 1948 and have demonstrat-
ed a long history of service.
A record crowd of 40 or so participat-
ed in the Romulus Black History Bus
Tour, more than double the number of
guests last year. The bus made five stops
at locations around the city that were
significant to the history of the commu-
nity and black culture. Participants on
the tour learned about two African-
American veterans from Romulus, one
from the Vietnam era for whom a local
park is named and another who fought
in the Civil War and is now buried in
Romulus. The creation of the Romulus
ProgressiveAssociation and theThomas
J. Coleman Community Center were
also topics on the tour which endedwith
two stops that were a part of the
Underground Railroad in the 1800s:
Romulus Wesleyan Church lead by
Pastor Bob Harper and the Kingsley
House at the Romulus Historical
Museum, whereMuseumDirector Pearl
Varner led the tours.

Council to schedule public
meetings about road repair costs
Mayor’s Ball is this Saturday
Legislators set monthly meeting
Belleville City Council members have
agreed to schedule both an informational
and town hall meeting regarding the cost
of street repairs in the city.
Officials learned last month that the
cost to repair all city streets would
exceed $10 million which would require
a levy of 13.07 mills on residents for 10
years. An alternate plan would be to levy
9.24mills for a 15-year term.
That would cost taxpayers an average
of $704 annually for 10 years or $498
annually for 15 years, according to a
Road Bond Analysis presented to council
members during their regular meeting
Feb. 16.
“It's not pretty,” noted City Manager
DianaKollmeyer.
Keith Tackett, director of the city
Department of Public Works said that
there is also a 15 percent increase in
paving costs expected this year, which
could impact the costs. He said that the
street study was performed throughout
the city and the repairs listed by street
according to the severity of the repairs
needed.
After some discussion, including com-
ments from the audience, council mem-
bers suggested establishing an informa-
tional meeting at the high school to
accommodate expected crowds and then
a public hearing on any action they may
take regarding the tax levy.
The motion was approved by a unani-
mous vote of the officials.
The Mayors' Ball, hosted by Romulus
Mayor LeRoy D. Burcroff and Belleville
Mayor Kerreen Conley, is planned for 5
p.m. until midnight, Saturday March 12 at
the Romulus Sheraton Hotel, 8000

the communities will include dinner, an
