Members of the Special
Enforcement Unit of theCanton
Township Police Department
conducted alcohol sales checks
during the month of February.
The special unit utilized a vol-
unteer decoy minor to attempt
the purchase alcohol at eight
businesses in Canton. Two busi-
nesses sold to the minor decoy,
while five refused the sale.
The two businesses who sold
alcohol were the 7-11 located at
44285 Ford Road and Maria's
Bakery 115N. HaggertyRoad.
Refusing to sell to the minor
decoy were: Super FineWine &
Liquor 1634 N. Haggerty; CVS
7269 N. Canton Center Road; 7-
11 43340 Warren Road; Rite Aid
180 S. Lilley Road and Rite Aid
4151N. CantonCenterRoad.
The Special Enforcement
Unit of the Canton Police
Department has performed
alcohol and tobacco compliance
checks at local businesses in the
past, and will continue to use
the decoy program as a means
of keeping minors safe in the
community, a spokesman noted.
The unit utilizes a “zero toler-
ance” enforcement strategy
when dealing with violations of
alcohol and tobacco sales, he
said.
Local ordinances provide for
a civil infraction ticket being
issued to the server or salesper-
son who sells alcohol to under
age persons as the result of an
undercover operation. The fine
is not more than $100 as pre-
scribedby the ordinance.
The establishment where the
sale to an underage buyer takes
place is cited for a Liquor
Control Commission (LCC) vio-
lation, resulting in an adminis-
trative hearing with the LCC.
Sales of tobacco products to
persons under age 18 result in a
misdemeanor ticket being
issued to the sales personwith a
fine of up to $50.
Canton Township will join
several other communities with a
move to new recycling efforts
using larger bins for the automat-
ed trash system.
Green For Life (GFL)
Environment, Inc., the current
waste hauler for the township
will begin the new program in
June and will exchange the cur-
rent 18-gallon recycling cans for
new, 64-gallon cans.
The waste hauler will spend
an approximate $1.2 million for
four new trucks capable of han-
dling the automated trash pick
up. The trucks are equippedwith
robotic arms that lift and empty
the larger recycling bins into the
special trucks designated for that
purpose. The driver of the truck
is not involved in emptying the
bins, a system that is already
employed in several local com-
munities.
Themove to the newprogram,
along with a four-year contract
extension with GFL was
approved by a 5-2 vote of the
Canton Township Board of
Trustees at a recentmeeting. The
extension was necessary, repre-
sentatives from the company
said, to recoup the cost of the
equipment for the new system.
Treasurer Dian Slavens and
Trustee Ann Marie Graham-
Hudak cast the no votes on the
new program citing the failure of
the township to put the contract
out for competitive bidding.
GFL has been the recycling
contractor in the township for
nearly 18 years during which
time the township has awarded
regular trash hauling contracts to
three separate vendors.
While those concerns were
mentioned by other board mem-
bers, Trustee John Anthony said
that the new plan should reduce
the amount of solid waste sent to
the landfill in Canton. He said
that should that landfill, current-
ly operated by Republic
Services, reach capacity, the
township would need an alterna-
tive site which could be more
costly.
The new plan, officials reiter-
ated, is expected to reduce the
amount of waste going to the
landfill as more is expected to be
recycled by residents with the
new, larger cans which will also
have lids.
Canton Township officials
recently approved a cost
increase for solid waste collec-
tion in the community. Residents
will now pay $155 annually for
the service which formerly cost
$142. This increase, according to
officials, is expected to stay in
place for several years.
In an effort to educate residents on
water and sewer rates, Canton Township
will be hosting a Community Forum at 6
p.m. Wednesday, March 29 in the Board
Room of the Canton Administration
Building.
The forum is designed to show resi-
dents how water and sewer rates are cal-
culated and to answer questions regard-
ing the 2017 rates. The forum is free and
open to the public.

Canton Division of Public Works at
