District to close 2 schools in Belleville
Elwell and Haggerty elemen-
tary schools in the Van Buren
Public School District will be
closed next year as part of a reor-
ganization of the district.
Members of the school board
voted unanimously Feb. 27 to
approve the recommendation of
Paul Wills fromPlante Moran, who
conducted a facility usage study.
Other changes include using the
other elementary schools for stu-
dents from kindergarten through
fourth grand and sending all fifth
and sixth grade students to South
Middle School. Seventh and
Eighth grade students will attend
classes at North Middle School
and there will be no changes at
BellevilleHighSchool where ninth
through 12th grade students attend
classes.
The changes will be effective
next September for the 2012-2013
school year.
The usage study estimated the
savings at about $450,000 to
$500,000 in building costs the first
year. The study also cited greater
fairness and equal opportunities
for students in amore demographi-
cally balanced environment.
The district will also save about
$175,000 in transportation costs
according to the study andwith the
instructional savings, the total
reductions to the budget could
reach approximately $1million.
The boundaries for schools will
be redistricted and a new, two-tier
bus plan put into effect, officials
said. Bus routes will be changes,
officials said.
The study also offered other
plans, one which predicted savings
of nearly $835,000 a year in addi-
tion to the transportation savings
was rejected by members of the
school board as it would have
increased class size to approxi-
mately 32 students for the next
three to five years.
The gifted and Talented
Program will be moved to Savage
Elementary School.
Tax abatement OK’d for
$3.5 million expansion
Senator seeks donations
for airport Freedom Center
The City of Romulus received some good
business news thisweek.
One business is set to make a major
investment and another is poised to become
a global player.
The city granted a 10-year tax abatement
to the former, Aerostar Manufacturing on
Northline Road. A production machining
and assembly facility, it has been located in
Romulus since 2004 and grown fromabout 40
employees to more than 114. They're set to
invest $3.5 million in their plant and has
asked for a 12-year abatement on the invest-
ment.
Council President Leroy Burcroff said the
company was only eligible for 10 years, how-
ever.
“We have a scoring system that we use so
we're consistent with everybody we work
with throughout the city,” he said. “This par-
ticular met the requirements for up to a 10-
year abatement.”
The abatement is good for 50 percent of
the taxes paid on the investment, which
means the city still gets additional revenue
fromthe expansion.
The council also had a chance recently to
tour the A123 Battery plant, according to
Burcroff. The firmoperates other facilities in
Michigan, including one in Livonia. The $100
million invested in the Romulus plant is
designed to turn it into a business campus
where the next generation of batteries will
be produced. The Romulus facility will even-
tually lure jobs back to the U.S. from China,
saidBurcroff.
“Any time you can bring jobs back to the
U.S., that's a good thing,” he said.
