The Eagle 02 25 16 - page 6

there could be 11 lead pipes in the area
and the city would replace all of them to
ensure the safety of residents in the area.
Wild stressed that the water-quality
testing would be performed by a third-
party laboratory not affiliated with the
city to prevent any appearance of collu-
sion.
City Council President Jim Godbout
concurred with Wild's assessment of the
handling procedures for the pipes in the
city.
“We replace them as we find them,”
Godbout said. Godbout was also critical of
a recent report alleging that Westland
water customers paid a rate second only
to that of Flint as the highest in the state
and one of the highest in the country. He
said that the city had contacted Mary
Grant, director of the Food and Water
Watch organization and that she had
agreed to send a letter explaining theway
the rates were calculated which would
drop Westland from 29th highest rate in
the country to 151st for 60,000 gallons of
water.
Wild said that representatives from the
Michigan Department of Environmental
Quality (MDEQ) had been in the city last
Thursday to investigate Raymore's claims
and that they would be at the meeting on
Monday to inform residents of their find-
ings.
Raymore had also claimed that he was
instructed to pump raw sewage into a
drain going into the City of Inkster, anoth-
er claim MDEQ representatives investi-
gated,Wild said.
Godbout noted that the new pumping
station on which the city is spending
about $3 million will alleviate any such
flooding or overflow sewage problems
during heavy rainfall.
All Raymore's charges and allegations
were to be discussed at the meeting last
Monday.
Godbout said that he found it curious
that Raymorewould bring thismatter for-
ward in such a public fashion shortly
after a discrimination complaint he filed
with the Equal Employment Opportunity
Commissionhadbeendismissed.
Raymore, a 19-year city employee, pre-
pared a packet of his allegations to pres-
ent to members of the council. He claims
that City Attorney James Fausone inter-
cepted the documentation Jan. 27 and did
not adhere to a 14-day deadline he set in
his written allegations, prompting his
public charges at the city council meeting
Feb. 15. He said that he could not in
“good conscience” remain silent any
longer.
Raymore filed for arbitration in his
disputes with a supervisor last year.
Arbitrators found for the supervisor but
did reduce the discipline. In January last
year, Raymore alleged discrimination
whenhewas not promoted and filed com-
plaints with both the EEOC and the
Michigan Civil Rights Commission. Both
were dismissed on Jan. 13.
Westland City Hall will soon be filled
with original creations by local artists
who have agreed to display their work
at the newbuilding.
Three Cities Art Club has joined with
the City of Westland in a partnership to
create an art gallery in the new
WestlandCityHall.
The agreement specifies that the art
will change every threemonths and that
for three of every 12 months, the space
will be available for other art groups to
displayworks.
The new area in the west wing of city
hall will be called The Gallery and is
located near the banquet and meeting
rooms.
“Three Cities Art Club is celebrating
its 60th birthday this year,” club
President Marilyn Meredith explained.
“Mayor (WilliamR.)Wild, who hasmade
it a priority to bring more cultural
opportunities to Westland, has followed
and supported our club for over 5 years
in our annual art exhibitions at the
Westland Library and our Festival of
the Arts at Westland Mall which is co-
sponsored by the Westland Rotary
Club.”
“The art club has brought with them
a lot of excitement and culture to
Westland,” saidWild.
The Gallery at city hall is the brain-
child of photographic artist Allen
Brooks. “When I saw the new city hall I
thought, 'What a great place for an art
gallery', and with Three Cities Art Club
having some of the finest artists in
southeast Michigan, many nationally
and internationally known, and with
everyone eager to display their a
work.........what a perfect match,” Brooks
said.
The premier exhibition includes
watercolors, oil, acrylics, pencil, pastels,
airbrush, mixed media and photogra-
phy, and runs through April 30. In, May,
students at the art department of John
Glenn High School will take over for a
month showing the best of students'
work created during the past school
year. These works will be on display for
the 50th anniversary celebration of the
city.
The official opening of the new
gallery, with a ribbon cutting ceremony,
is planned for 4 p.m. tomorrow, Feb. 26.
Wild and several city officials will be on
hand to open the new attraction and the
public is invited to the ceremony and
reception which will continue until 7
p.m.
Westland City Hall is located at 36300
Warren Road in Westland. For more
