The City of Romulus may soon step up
efforts to educate the public about the
quality of waterwithin the city.
Mayor Leroy Burcroff said officials are
discussing the best way to get the message
out to the public in the spirit of trans-
parency.
“We're looking at doing aPublic Service
Announcement for cable or supplying
other basic information,” he said. “We're
trying to talk about the Romulus system,
and different ways that residents can get
the data.”
The idea is in part a response to the
water crisis in Flint, and to alleviate any
concerns residents have over the safety of
theirwater.
Resident Charles Miller said he first
had the inkling of concern five years ago,
when they changed the water meter in his
daughter's house and found that there
were leadpipes there.
“At the time I had a generalized con-
cern about it,”Miller said.
Those pipes dated back to 1943; the
pipes in his own house are two years
older.
“This city of Romulus has lead pipes in
many of the older homes,” Miller said. “In
many instances, older homes still have
leadpipes.”
Lead pipes were still used in homes
under construction until 1986. After that,
the Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA) issues the Lead and Copper Rule,
through the Safe Drinking Water Act. The
rule requires corrosion control treatment
to prevent lead and copper from contami-
nating drinkingwater.
Random tests are now required to help
maintain water safety. In Romulus, homes
are tested in each corner of the communi-
ty at random, said Keith Boc, assistant
director of the Department of Public
Works. Residents are instructed about the
way to conduct the tests-to take samples
first thing in the morning, after water has
rested in the pipes all night. The results
are analyzed and the city sends the results
to the homeowner. They are also pub-
lished and distributed every year in the
annual water quality reports each sum-
mer.
Any result higher than 15 parts per bil-
lion (ppb) requires action.
Those results have always exceeded
federal regulations for quality and safety,
saidBoc.
“We've not had a result that exceeded
the action level-not even close to that
level-in all the houses we've tested,” he
said.
Even so, there are things a homeowner
can do if he or she is concerned. Lead test-
ing kits are available at hardware stores.
Also, run the water before you drink from
it first thing in themorning, he said.
Burcroff said water quality and safety
information is also available on the city
website. It can be found through the pub-
lic works link under the department of
publicworks tab.
“We're happy to talk about the quality of
our water because we're proud of our
water quality,” Burcroff said. “We've got
gooddata.”
