Belleville Mayor Kerreen
Conley and Romulus Mayor
LeRoy Burcroff are once again
teaming up to host the 5th
Annual Mayors' Ball beginning at
6 p.m. March 3, to support the
Belleville andRomulus Boys and
Girls Clubs
During the past four years the
event has raised thousands of
dollars to support the organiza-
tion which provides a safe place
for hundreds of children to go
after school when there may be
no other alternative.
The evening at the Belleville
Yacht Club (BYC) includes din-
ner, dancing and a live and silent
auction with all proceeds sup-
porting the Boys and Girls Clubs.
Usual attendance at the event is
about 300 community and indus-
try
leaders,
including
Southeastern Michigan mayors,
supervisors, council members,
trustees, school board members,
county commissioners, state rep-
resentatives and U.S. congress
representatives, according to a
prepared release.
The Boys and Girls Club pro-
vides an environment centered
on values, respect, education,
and creativity allowing children
to grow. Funds are needed to
support programming for life
skills, leadership, goal setting,
tutoring, and recreational activi-
ties that expand the minds and
imagination of the students, posi-
tioning them to succeed in a
world that sometimes is stacked
against them, according to a
statement.
Sponsorships for the Mayor's
Ball are now available at several
funding levels to fit any budget, a
spokesperson said. Donations
are also being sought for the
silent and live auctions at the
event. Popular auction items are
sporting event tickets, baskets, or
cash contributions toward live
auction items. All donations are
tax deductible and the organiza-
tion is a 501(c)3 designee, ID
number 38-1387123.
For more information, contact
Conley's office at (313) 969-5183 or
.
Wadsworth.
Others spoke up about the need to keep
the inscribed bricks in the same place,
among the same groups, as they were in
the original. McCraight said the city was
taking plenty of detailed photographs for
just that purpose.
The monument was originally dedicat-
ed in 1992, and had fallen into some disre-
pair. Burcroff said the intent was to
enhance the regular maintenance of the
monument after it's reconstructed to
ensure that didn't happen again.
Once they heard the details of the pro-
posal-and the ongoing maintenance that
would take place-veterans and their sup-
porters were reassured that the project
would be completed with care and dignity,
and the memorial would reflect its origi-
nal intent.
“Everybody at our post is happy to see
this,” saidBobWilliams from theRomulus
VFWPost 9568. “It's going to be better than
before, and the needed repairs will get
done. I'm looking forward to see it back up
again.”
Burcroff said the monument wouldn't
stay in storage any longer thannecessary.
“Our intent is that as soon as the build-
ing is up and running, we'll begin on the
monument,” he said. “We intend to get
started on it as soon as possible.”
Following the detaileddiscussion of the
plans,Wadsworth said that while hewasn't
happy the monument was coming down,
he was “satisfied” with the plan to rebuild
thememorial.
Wadsworth had been critical of the
plan at a meeting last month when he
announced that he had been receiving
phone calls from residents criticizing the
plan tomove themonument.
“I'mnot happy about it beingmoved but
I understand the need for a court. I have a
brick on that wall, my father has a brick on
that wall. The monument means a lot to a
lot of people,” he said. “I'm not happy it
has to be done, but, I am satisfied with the
plan,”Wadsworth said.
