Superintendent of Romulus
Community Schools Marjie McAnally
presented members of the Romulus
Community Schools Board of Education
certificates of appreciation at their Jan.
11meeting.
“Serving on a school board has been
described as the 'toughest volunteer job
in America. Yet Michigan's public school
board members dedicate countless per-
sonal hours to attending meetings,
school functions, and hours of prepara-
tion for the decisions they make,” said
McAnally.
“On top of that, many pursue their
own professional development to stay on
top of the ever-changing education land-
scape. Collectively, school board mem-
bers in Michigan have spent about 7,000
hours attending training and profession-
al development. They're dedicated indi-
viduals who are committed to the contin-
uing success of our schools and stu-
dents,” she added.
January is School Board Recognition
Month andRomulus Community Schools
joined 541 local and 56 intermediate
school districts across the state to thank
these community volunteers for their
untiring dedication to public education.
School board members in Romulus
develop policies and make tough deci-
sions that help shape the future of our
education system. They bear responsibil-
ity and oversight for an annual budget of
over $30 million, 3,000 students, 300
employees' and seven instructional
buildings, she said.
“We proudly join educators and com-
munity members in saluting these edu-
cation advocates as they provide vision
and leadership for student achievement,
academic programs, district funding and
school facilities,”McAnally added. “They
preserve the core of our democracy-pub-
lic education.”
Road construction and the Wayne Road
sidewalk projects.
“Both make our community more safe,
walkable and pedestrian-friendly,” said
Burcroff.
This year, he said the city would con-
centrate on additional economic and com-
munity development projects, including
the expansion of the 34th District Court,
which will be funded through bonds sold
by the city.
Much has been accomplished, during
the “first half,” he said, but there is still
plenty to do.
“Don't give up at halftime,” Burcroff
said, quoting legendary football coach
Bear Bryant. “Concentrate onwinning the
secondhalf.”
The Mayors' Ball, hosted by Romulus
Mayor LeRoy D. Burcroff and Belleville
Mayor Kerreen Conley, is planned for 5
p.m. until midnight, Saturday March 12 at
the Romulus Sheraton Hotel, 8000
MerrimanRoad inRomulus.
Tickets are $100 per person and the
donation to the Boys and Girls Clubs in
the communities will include dinner, an
open bar, dancing and entertainment
alongwith live and silent auctions.
Advance ticket purchase is required.

A 13-year-old freshman student at
Belleville High School was arrested and
subsequently expelled after a gun was
discovered inhis backpackDec. 15.
Parents of students at the high school
expressed their displeasure at the failure
of school administrators and particularly
with principal Abdul Madyn to notify
them of the incident. Madyn told TV
reporters that the student had been
arrested by police and subsequently
expelled. He also said he had an “open
door policy” and would discuss the inci-
dent with any parents who had questions
about the incident.
According toMadyn’s aired comments,
the student had some issues with others
at the school and brought the stolen
handgun to class. The gun was unloaded
but the teen did have bullets in his back-
pack.
Staff members and parents only found
out about the situation last Friday,
according to reports, and were upset that
no notification had been forthcoming
fromschool administrators.
Monday morning, Jan. 25, city officials
announced that in “response to a generic
threat received by several high schools in
southeast Michigan, Romulus High
School and Romulus Police Department
instituted proactive precautionary secu-
rity measures to ensure the safety of stu-
dents and staff.”
The response came after a student
brought an Instagram message to the
attention of a staff member at the high
school. The message contained a non-
specific threat directed to “rhs,” similar
to other generic threats received by sev-
eral other high schools. The post did not
mentionRomulusHighSchool by name.
Romulus Police Department officers,
were able to determine that the threat to
thehigh school “was not credible.”
Police officials said that a state of
heightened awareness was still in place
and that the department and the school
district were “partnering to ensure the
continued safety and security of students,
staff, residents and citizens in our com-
munity.”
Romulus School Board Trustee Devan Safford, left, Trustee Tomeka Boles, Secretary
Theresa Beard, President Tom Kuderik, Treasurer Sandra Crout and Vice President
Danielle Funderburg show off their certificates of appreciation for their service. Trustee
Ulanda Caldwell is not pictured.
