Suspect arrested in brutal killing
Romulus police have arrested a
41-year-old Canton Township man
in the brutal death of a 57-year-old
city resident whose body was dis-
coveredby his son Jan. 7.
The suspect, Michael Joseph
Sutton, was arraigned in 34th
District Court last Friday on
charges of first degree murder,
felony murder and torture in the
death of Frank Jones of Springhill
Street. Jones was found in his
home, in the area of Middlebelt
and Eureka roads, when his son
who had not heard from him since
mid-week, went to check on his
father. He found the victim lying
face down in a pool of blood on the
bathroom floor with his hands
bound behind his back and a plas-
tic bag tied over his head.
Police arrived on the scene on
Springhill at about 1 p.m., shortly
after the son's 911 call. Responding
officers discovered the victim and
found at least three areas of the
home where it appeared theremay
have been a struggle and a bed-
room ransacked. The officers also
found personal items in disarray
and the victim's cell phone andwal-
let missing. Also missing was the
victim's 1999 yellow Ford Mustang
convertible which Canton police
found in the parking lot of the Ford
Road Walmart on Sunday in
response to a “Be on the Lookout”
alert from Romulus. Surveillance
tapes indicated that the vehicle
had been parked there at about
4:20 p.m. Saturday.
Investigators from the Romulus
Police Department, assisted by
forensic scientists from the
Michigan State Police Northville
Crime Laboratory, processed the
crime scene. An autopsy by the
Wayne County Medical Examiner
determined the cause of death to
be suffocation and ruled the death
a homicide. Jones had been beaten
prior to death, according to the
medical examiner's findings, and
had wounds on his face, chest and
shoulders.
While investigators would not
share specific details of the evi-
dence leading to the arrest of
Sutton, Police Chief Robert
Dickerson said, “Physical evidence
found at the crime scene and on
the suspect at his arrest, along with
phone and data records indicating
an intimate relationship, led police
to their suspect.”
Dickerson also said that the
quick apprehension and arrest
could be attributed to the collabo-
rative effort to the Romulus Police
Department, the Canton Township
Police Department and the
MichiganStatePolice.
“We are very pleased there is a
suspect in custody for this violent
and senseless murder,” said Capt.
Monica Yesh of the Michigan State
Police. “The quick and successful
conclusion of this investigation is a
result of the dedication and profes-
sionalism displayed by members of
the Romulus
P o l i c e
Department.
We
are
proud
to
have worked
together with
them to solve
this crime.
“We send
our condo-
lences to the
family of the victim who must be
going through such a difficult time
right now,” she said.
The court set bond for Sutton at
$1 million, cash or surety. He will
face a preliminary examination in
34th District Court on the charges
Jan. 25.
