Legislator files for county commission
State Rep. Richard LeBlanc, D-
Westland, has announced his can-
didacy for the Wayne County
Commission - 12th District.
LeBlanc recently filed the required
forms with the Wayne County
Clerk, making him the first official
candidate for the position that
includes the communities of
Garden City, Inkster and Westland
(partial). Current 12th District
County Commissioner Joan
Gebhardt, a Livonia resident, has
confirmed publicly she will not be
a candidate for re-election.
State Senator Glenn Anderson,
Westland Mayor William Wild,
Garden City Mayor Randy Walker,
Inkster Mayor Hilliard Hampton,
Commissioner Diane Webb of
Garden City (9th District) and
Westland City Clerk Eileen DeHart
are amongst several elected offi-
cialswhohave endorsedLeBlanc.
“As a local legislator, I've been an
effective advocate for the residents
of our communities, helping them
one by one, for nearly two decades.
If elected, GardenCity, Inkster and
Westland residents will receive
the same high level of responsive-
ness that has been demonstrated to
my constituency during my seven
terms of office since first becoming
elected in 1992,” LeBlanc said.
“Our citizens continue to face
challenges within Wayne County.
Emphasis on jobs and economic
development, as well as on the
budget and fiscal responsibility,
will help to ease the burden on res-
idents. County services are
strained due to decreased tax rev-
enue, yet issues involving our
roads, crime and public safety,
and public transportation still
deserve immediate attention. This
is an exciting opportunity to contin-
uemy record of accomplishment to
the residents and businesses of the
new12thDistrict.”
Anderson, also a Westland
democrat, was enthusiastic about
LeBlanc's candidacy.
“I have worked closely with
Richard over the last 16 years and
believe he will make an excellent
County Commissioner for the 12th
District. Dedication to public serv-
ice is something we share and I am
confident he will continue to pro-
vide the highest level of integrity,
ethical conduct, and professional
representation to our residents. I
plan to do all I can to assist in his
election.”
Wildwas also supportive.
“The relationship my adminis-
tration has had with Richard dur-
ing his service as our State
Representative has been excep-
tional. We share a positive vision
for our community and for the 12th
District, and I offermy highest level
of support for his election.”
LeBlanc served previously on
the Westland City Council for nine
years and theWayne-
Westland Board of Education
from 1992-95. He has also been an
activemember of numerous boards
and commissionswithinWestland.
In addition to his elective serv-
ice, LeBlanc has also been
employed by the Ford Motor Co.,
and served 22 years with the
Canton Police Department in a
part-time capacity. He and his wife,
Cheryl, have two adult sons and
two grandchildren. LeBlanc has
established a campaignwebsite:

The primary election will take
placeTuesday, Aug. 7.
Congressman is honored
with ‘green’ award from city
Friday the 13th proved a lucky day for
U.S. Sen. Carl Levin's visit toWestland.
While in the city, Mayor William R. Wild
presented the congressman with the Green
Leadership Award during a stop at Westland
Colonial VillageApartments.
Westland Colonial Village, which installed
an electric vehicle charging station in
January 2011, was the first apartment com-
plex in the nation to install a vehicle charger.
Levin has been a supporter of numerous
green initiatives including Cash for
Clunkers; a program that replaced older
vehicles with more fuel efficient vehicles to
protect the environment and the Great
Lakes Restoration Project. He called for an
increased production of electric vehicles
and expand the electric vehicle tax credit.
“Creating a sustainable environment
today is one of the most important contribu-
tions we can make to tomorrow's generation
not only for Westland citizens for all resi-
dents of the State of Michigan. This award
was developed to inspire, educate and recog-
nize those in the community who are taking
steps to protect the environment. Senator
Levin has continued to exemplify outstand-
ing environmental leadership inWashington,
DC and it is my honor to present this award
tohimtoday”, saidWild.
“Westland values being “green” and the
installation of this electrical vehicle charging
stationwas just another example of our com-
mitment tomakeWestlandMichigan's green-
est city. As a proud owner of a Chevy Volt, we
wanted Senator Levin to see first-hand what
we are doing to promote cleaner transporta-
tion alternatives for our citizens”, saidWild.
