Municipal buildings reflect regard for arts
The Plymouth community is the
site of not one, but two, Pewabic
Pottery murals depicting the history
and tradition of the area.
The mural in Plymouth Township
Hall was dedicatedMarch 25, 2007, as
a gift of the Village Potters Guild, the
Plymouth Community Arts Council,
andDetroit-basedPewabicPottery.
In early 2006, the Village Potters
Guild was approached by Pewabic
Pottery about the project and becom-
ing involved in the proposed mural.
Joined by the Plymouth Community
Arts Council, the three groups cooper-
atively used grant money to create the
mural, according to information from
the township. regarding the history of
the artwork.
Members of the Village Potters
Guild created the design of the
Township Hall mural and more than
420 people helped create tiles, includ-
ing Scout troops. Village Potters Guild
members created images of area
landmarks included in the designs
sponsored by businesses and individ-
uals. The local potters worked in the
specialized terra cotta clay particular
to Pewabic Pottery, which was donat-
ed for the creation of the tiles.
The finished Township Hall mural
measures about 7 by 11 feet and
includes more than 500 handmade
tiles. It features township landmarks,
roads, railroad tracks and a train, sur-
roundedby textured and colorful art.
A second Pewabic Potterymural in
a Plymouth public building was
installed last year in the vestibule at
the district library.
“We are very fortunate to have this
mural,” said Library Director Carol
Souchock, who's grateful to the anony-
mous donor who made the installa-
tion a reality. “We had a donor who
wanted to celebrate the Plymouth
community,” she said. “This is
designed specifically for our commu-
nity. We worked with the architect to
find different features both in the city
and township,” Souchock said.
“It was really an amazing experi-
ence,” she said of the work. The
library mural includes City of
Plymouth and Plymouth Township
buildings and landscapes.
An image of the Penn Theatre is
featured in the work along with the
Plymouth library view facing Union
Street. The downtownPlymouth clock
is shown in the library mural, along
with Plymouth Township Park and
Miller Woods in the township as well
