DearFriends;
Forty-two years ago, the Belleville area strawberry
growers decided to get together with their friends at
St. Anthony's Church to celebrate another season.
For many years before then, residents of the small
community of Belleville had looked forward to the
short season of picking strawberries on their knees to
enjoy the special taste.
During this short time of the strawberries, they
would be consumed multiple times during the day
fresh from the baskets, perhaps with a little pow-
dered sugar, on sundaes or shortcakes.
Now, the new homes that have made the Belleville area a special place to live
have made strawberry picking a chore of the past. Carnival rides, street vendors
and crafters, parades and diverse locations have made The Belleville National
Strawberry Festival beyond anything the folks at the first celebration could imag-
ine.
However, the desire to get together to meet friends, enjoy good food, and cele-
brate life in our “small” townhasn't changed.
Enjoy!
