The taste of tradition
Rotary Club barbecue began festival 56 years ago
There's no arguingwitha good idea.
Back in 1956, Plymouth Rotary Club
member Don Lightfoot had just such a
brainstormwhen the clubmembership
was looking for a way to help pay for
some playground equipment inwhat is
nowcalled JayceePark.
Lightfoot thought a chicken barbe-
cue in the park at the end of Wing
Street prepared by the club members
and their wives would build some com-
munity pride while helping generate
some funds for the needed equipment.
That was the beginning of what is
now a treasured tradition in Plymouth,
the annual Rotary Club Chicken
Barbecue, arriving Sept 11 this year for
the 56th time.
Lightfoot is creditedwith the idea in
a book about the history of Plymouth
written by Sam Hudson published in
1976.
Now, the weekend after Labor Day
in downtown Plymouth finds the
streets packed with service club volun-
teers, performers and thousands of vis-
