and white rice into his face? I
attempt to make the foods he can
have as palatable as possible and
act like eating them with him is
simply routine while all the time I
amwondering if he'd smell a smug-
gled in carryout order of the afore-
mentioned sliders about which I
have been obsessing for days.
Last week, I could take nomore.
I went into a full-fledged, hard-core
sugar attack and stormed out of the
office downstairs to the Avenue
Market seeking candy, cookies,
cake….anything bad for me. That
was a mistake. The owners of this
little market pride themselves on
stocking healthy, fresh, high-quality,
nutritious foods, leaving me shak-
ing, edgy, twitching and screaming
for sugar. Think Charlie Sheen in
one of his home video telecasts,
without the cigarettes.
The very gracious owner sug-
gested, ever so gently, that I try the
chocolate-covered biscotti, low-
sodium, low-sugar, low-fat, actually
with some nutritional value. She
quietly explained that she, too, has
low blood sugar and understood
how important it is to keep one's
body regulated…yadda, yadda,
yadda, anyway, I think that's what
shewas saying in her kind and con-
cerned way because she obviously
mistook me for somebody who
needed food for anything other
than the purpose of fueling my
addictions. I admit, by the time I
handed over the cash, I was in a
fugue state, glassy eyed and com-
pletely uncomprehending of any-
thing she said.
I grabbed those puppies and ran
back upstairs to the office where
Sean and I each wolfed down four
of 'em as fast as our slavering jaws
allowed. We couldn't cram those
rock-hard dunking cookies into our
mouths quick enough and twice he
thought he broke a tooth chomping
down on an almond.
We went back today and got
another package which we are
halfway throughalready.
But hey, it's only 10 a.m.

bility or attempting to do more to
serve in the capacity voters chose
her for.
Wadsworth is, in this day and
age, the kind of public servant we
can all wish for and admire. Her
conduct has always been above-
board and her priorities have
always been clear. She brought
dignity, kindness, experience and
wisdom to the board and her fel-
low trustees have only high praise
for her contributions.
Her replacement, now being
sought by the remaining board
members, no matter how quali-
fied or dedicated, will have some
very big shoes to fill.
We wish her, and her husband,
well in their newadventure.
Homelessness should not be
one of the problems facing veter-
ans returning from deployment or
older veterans later in their life.
However, statistics show approxi-
mately one in 10 of the nations
homeless population are veterans.
Jason Allen, director of Michigan's
Veteran's Affairs Directorate, is
reaching out to those in need by
encouraging veterans to discuss
their benefits eligibility with their
county Veteran Affairs office or vet-
erans service organization.
“Many Michigan veterans don't
realize there are potential grants
available through the Michigan
Veterans Trust Fund to help fami-
lies in need. This funding is specif-
ically set aside to help eligible
wartime service veterans. As
director of Veteran's Affairs, I want
to ensure eligible veterans learn
about and apply for the benefits
created by federal and state law.
By contacting a county Veteran's
Affairs office or veterans service
organization they can receive
application assistance for these
benefits,” saidAllen.
Almost every county in the state
has a Veteran's Affairs office. The
county counselors and veterans
service officers are knowledgeable
about the programs available and
rules for application. “There are
great services out there for our vet-
erans. If you are a homeless veter-
an in need, please pick up the
phone and dial our national call
center for homeless veterans at
(877) 424-3838,”Allen said.
For more information about
county offices visit the Michigan
Veteran's Affairs web site at
www.michigan.gov/veterans and
follow the link for “County Contacts
for Veterans” on the left side of the
page. Contact information about
veterans service officers can be
found at the same web site by
choosing “Federal Benefits” and
selecting “State Service Officers”
fromthe drop-downmenu.
For more information, contact
the state Veteran's Affairs
Directorate at (517)335-6523 or
email to dmva-webmaster@michi-
gan.gov.
