The investigation into vandalism at a
Michigan Avenue church in Wayne is still
underway, according toWayne police.
Vandals reportedly kicked in doors and
broke the windows Nov. 27 at a former
Burger King next door to the New Hope
Baptist Church in the 33000 block of
Michigan Avenue. The church had pur-
chased the former fast-food outlet to use
as a community center and Head Start
preschool program.
The Rev. Virgil Humes of New Hope
Baptist said that this is the third time the
church has been the target of vandals dur-
ing the past 27 years.
In this latest incident, vandals attempt-
ed to also damage one of the church vans
parked on the property. The former
Burger King is currently under renova-
tion for use by the church, officials said.
Vandals smashed seven windows and a
doorway in the incident which Humes
reportedly said he suspects was racially
motivated.
The church was first vandalized at a
different location by two members of the
European Educational Association who
were apprehended following an investiga-
tion by the FBI, Wayne County and
Michigan State Police. One of the two
went to prison while the second provided
community servicehours to the church.
The church was vandalized again in
2009 but the perpetrators were not appre-
hended in that incident.
The church currently has about 1,800
members, according toHume.
Anyone with information about the
vandalism is asked to call the Wayne
PoliceDepartment at (734) 721-1414.
