including its innovative self-serve theatre
drink station (first inDetroit 11 years ago) - and
Phoenix' creation of buying movie tickets in
the same line as concessions. Additionally, the
classic, hand-painted murals on the lobby
walls and theater hallways have been touched
up; new carpet has been installed and fresh
paint colors have been added throughout the
theater. On-Line movies tickets are now avail-
able

Likemany of the theater counterparts of its
day in the '40s, the State Wayne created a
wrap-around marquee. The sign gives the the-
atre its personality with exactly 1,152 lamps -
550which stay lit and 602 on a “chaser” to light
up the downtown streetscape. Phoenix
restored the sign to its former glory with 536
lamps replaced and the electronics fully
restored.
“Marquees such as this classic have gone
dark over time, due to theater closings, the
widening of streets, and the like,” Jacobson
said. “The State Wayne is one of the few such
surviving marquees in Michigan, and the
wrap-around configuration across the front
and side of the theatre is pretty unique any-
where in the country. This was a project I
wanted to take on from the minute I saw that
colossalmarquee. It just feels right to helppre-
serve this historic theater and to keep making
movie-going memories in the community for
customers of all ages for years to come.”
The City of Wayne retains ownership but
has signed Phoenix Theatres to manage on a
long-term contract. Phoenix Theatres helped
forge a relationship between the city and the
film studios for the latter to reimburse a large
portion of the digital cinema experience.
Visitors to either www.phoenixmovies.net
or www.movietickets.com can purchase tickets
days in advance, so they can secure tickets
without waiting in line.
Belleville resident Ruth Bleeker would
like to see a lighted Christmas tree at the
FivePoints intersectiondowntown.
Not everyone thinks it's a good idea, how-
ever.
Bleeker approached the Belleville City
Council recently during a regular meeting to
ask for help in having the holiday display
erected, something she says was a tradition
at the spot about 60 years ago.
Bleeker told the council she is donating a
20-foot tree and enlisted someone to erect
and stabilize the tree and install solar lights.
She told the council members that shewould
also be responsible for any plantings dis-
turbed at the site. She told the council mem-
bers that she had first approached the
Downtown Development Authority with the
request, but had been sent to the city. She
also told the city council members that she
had discussed the matter withWayne County
Commissioner Kevin McNamara who sup-
ported the plan. She said that McNamara
sent men to the site to ensure that a tree
would not create any vision interference at
the intersection. Five Points isWayne County
property.
Bleeker asked the city to have the tree
decorated by Department of Public Works
employees and then removed at the end of
the holiday season. She said that she has
enlisted volunteers and donated items to
cover the rest of the costs.
Mayor Kerreen Conley told Bleeker she
wouldhave to go through the various city and
departments to obtain the proper permits for
sucha display.
DPW Director Keith Boc said the depart-
ment had neither the time or the necessary
equipment, such as a cherry picker, to put up
or take down the lights on a tree of that size.
No decision was made on the matter at
the city level andBleeker was referred to the
WayneCounty offices inWayne.
Children inWayne andWestland are going
to get awhole lot healthier.
That's the hope of the Parks and
Recreation Department which just received
a $95,000 state grant to try and make it hap-
pen.
According to Barbara Christner, director
of youth and family services at the joint recre-
ation department, the grant came as a collab-
oration with Eastern Michigan University
21st Century Commission Learning Centers
Bright Future After School Program, which
already had some programs under way in
Wayne-Westland schools.
“It just seemed like a natural collabora-
tion, since they already had programs here,”
Christner said.
The funding will be used to help encour-
age physical activity and healthy eating in
before and after school programs and sum-
mer programming, Christner said.
“We're going to have programs in six
schools,” she said. “We'll be working with par-
ents, too, educating them about providing
healthy snacks.”
Christner said some of the funding would
be used to install another community garden,
this one at Lincoln Elementary School in
Westland, to help teach children about grow-
ing healthy foods.
Additionally, the program will include
monthly meetings with parents, showing
them the farmers' market and discussing
healthier eating.
“In the fall, we are planning a Family
Health Expo,” she said, “which will include
some testing and educations. We've partnered
with Oakwood Health Systems. She added
that she submitted a letter of support from
Oakwood as part of the grant application.
The new effort should state in five schools
in January and continue for the remainder of
the school year, she said. The healthy exer-
cise and eating program will also be part of
the recreation department summer day
camp, she said.
“It should be a lot of fun for the kids and
the parents, too,” she said.
