Voters choose 3 incumbents, 1 new candidate
Health Center to
share federal grant
Wayne voters reject millage request
While the results of the mayoral
election inWestland were certainly
no surprise, considering that
incumbent Mayor William Wild
was unopposed, there were some
surprises in the city council race.
Voters were asked to choose
four members of the city council.
The top vote getter was incumbent
Councilwoman Christine Cicirelli
Bryant who garnered nearly 19
percent of the vote with a total of
4,079.
Newcomer Devin Coleman
came in second with 18 percent of
the voteswithhis total of 3,899. This
was his second bid for an elected
council seat. His total was followed
by incumbent Councilman Michael
Kehrer with 17 percent of the vote
or 3,708 and incumbent Dewey
Reeves with 14 percent of the vote
with 3,032 votes.
Cicirelli, Coleman and Kehrer
will serve 4-year terms while
Reeveswill serve a 2-year term.
Incumbent Meriem Kadi
received 13 percent of the total
votes for a total of 2,723 followed by
Donna Stottlemyer-Beaupre with
10 percent of the vote for a total of
2,182. Bill Campbell won 10 percent
of the votes for a total of 2,138.
There are currently 63,026 regis-
tered voters in the City of Westland,
according to records of the city
clerk, and of those only 10.21 per-
cent or 6,434 voted in the election
last week.
Even though he was unopposed,
5,634 votes were cast for Wild with
176write in votes on the ballots.
In the council race, there were
47 write-in names submitted by vot-
ers.
Western Wayne Family Health
Centers in Inkster is among the 236
new Health Center sites across the
country to receive part of $150 mil-
lion in funding under the
Affordable Care Act, according to a
spokesman from the U.S.
Department of Health and Human
Services.
The funding will expand access
to health care to more than 1.25
million additional patients nation-
wide, he said. Inkster is one of only
nine centers in Michigan which
will receive a total of $6,251,320.
“This tremendous investment to
bring new Health Centers to
Michigan is greatly appreciated,”
said KimSibilsky, CEO of Michigan
Primary Care Association. “Not
only will it help ensure more
Michigan residents have access to
quality, affordable primary and
preventive care, it will also create
new jobs and boost local
economies. TheHealthCentermis-
sion is to ensure everyone can get
the health care they need, where
they need it and when they need it,
and this new funding is one more
step toward achieving that mis-
sion.”
only consist of the reconstruction
of the intersection of Cherry Hill
and Newburgh Road, but the west
side of Cherry Hill will also be
widened from four to five lanes,
and there will be an area at the
west end of the project which
transitions the road from the
newly built five-lane road to the
existing two-lane road. Other fea-
tures of the project include, a new
traffic signal installation at the
intersection, drainage improve-
ments and sidewalk enhance-
ments.
The state, through federal
funding, will pay 81.85 percent of
the total cost of construction, or
$960,000. Westland and Wayne
County have agreed to split the
remaining $213,000 of the project,
with a total cost to each of
$106,500. The project is currently
out for bids and no contractor has
been selected as yet.
A separate project on
Newburgh Road from Palmer to
Cherry Hill is scheduled to com-
mence inMay of 2014.
Only 2,624 of the 13,080 regis-
tered voters in Wayne turned out
last week to choose a mayor and
three members of the city council.
That 20 percent of registered voters
also decided the two ballot ques-
tions, keeping the current pension
plan for public safety employees in
the city and refusing the request for
a 10- year, 7-mill tax to fund retire-
ment and legacy costs for both
police and firefighters in the city.
Incumbent Mayor Al Haidous
won nearly twice as many votes as
challenger Don Flynn. Haidous
received 1,504 votes or 64 percent
to the 852 or 36 percent cast for
Flynn.
Voters chose three members of
city council, with Susan Rowe
receiving the top number of votes
with 25 percent of ballots cast or
1,623 votes. Rowe formerly served
on the council but resigned two
years ago when she unsuccessfully
campaigned against Haidous for
the mayoral office. Incumbent Jim
Hawley garnered 1,464 votes or 23
percent of the total while incum-
bent James Henley received 16
percent or 1,053 votes.
Unsuccessful in their bid to
serve on the council were Shari
Welch with 844 or 13 percent of the
votes, Brenda Ozog with 785 or 12
percent of the vote and Jamie Conn
with about 10 percent or 626 per-
cent of the votes.
The proposals, the first to
amend the Wayne City Charter to
allow police officers and firefight-
ers to become members of a sepa-
rate retirement system under the
provision of the Act 345 retirement
system, did not meet with voter
approval. The first proposal
received 1,046 Yes votes but was
defeated by 1,525 No votes. That
was about 59 percent of voters say-
ingNowhile about 41 percent were
in favor of the proposal.
The second ballot proposal
would have allowed the city to
adopt the Act 345 retirement sys-
tem for police officer and firefight-
ers funded with the levy of a new
tax not to exceed 7mills in any year
for a 10-year period.
Voters said No to this proposal,
casting 1,628 No votes or about 63
percent of the ballots. About 37 per-
cent of the voters were in favor of
themeasure, casting 966Yes votes.
