Group awards scholarships
Cassidy Burns and Jennifer McCaffery
received a little help with their college
tuition last August when they were named as
winners of the Wayne High School Alumni
Association scholarships. Each of the women
received $1,500 from the group and the fund-
ing is renewable for three additional years if
they remain full-time students and maintain
a 3.0GradePoint Average (GPA).
According to Kathy Quinn Hayes, a direc-
tor of the scholarship bulletin for the alumni
association, the student winners were select-
ed randomly from all the 2012 Wayne
Memorial High School graduates who had a
minimum 3.5 GPA and also participated in
school or community activities.
Burns is a Wayne resident who was a
member of the National Honor Society,
World Language Club, Junior Civitans and
theFigure SkatingK.O.M. program.
She has been a volunteer figure skating
instructor with young children for the past
five years.
She is currently attending Eastern
Michigan University and plans to become an
athletic trainer.
McCaffery is also a Wayne resident. She
participated in soccer, Cross Country and
track and was a member of the National
Honor Society, ZebraGuides, UpwardBound
Programand theRotary Interact club.
McCaffery is also attending Eastern
Michigan University and is in the Honors
College nursing program. Her goal is to
become a nurse practitioner specializing in
pediatric oncology.
In addition, she works part-time at the
TexasRoadHouse as a hostess.
Quinn Hayes explained that the mission
of the alumni group is to award scholarship
like these to deserving Wayne Memorial
HighSchool graduates.
The awards are funded by donations from
members and friends and used to create an
endowment fund that will continually pro-
vide future scholarships.
As part of the mission statement, the
group is also dedicated to promoting the
reestablishment of high school friendships
by hosting the Annual Alumni Reunion
Banquet which honors the class celebrating
the 50th anniversary of their high school
graduation.
That event will be at Wayne Tree Manor
onVanBornRoad onMay 17, 2013.
The class of 1963 will be honored.
Invitations will be mailed in March of 2013
and names of attendees will be posted on the
website www.waynehighalumni.com as
reservations are received, Quinn-Hayes said.
An Inkster man drowned in Belleville
Lake last weekend.
Ivah Thomas Orange, 68, was found float-
ing in the lake at about 7:33 a.m. last Sunday
when a jogger called Van Buren Police to
report seeing his body.
Police responded to the site, near
Belleville and Denton roads along with res-
cue crews from the Van Buren Fire
Department. The victim was removed from
the water by rescue workers using cold
water gear and special recovery equipment.
Orange was pronounced dead at the
scene by paramedics from Huron Valley
Ambulance. Results of an autopsy scheduled
for Monday by the Wayne County Medical
Examiners Office to determine the exact
cause of death were not available at press
time.
Police said that it is not known why
Orange was at Belleville Lake or what he
was doing in the area. His vehicle was found
parked and secured in Hayward's parking
lot.
The investigation into the death is ongo-
ing, according to a police statement.

Happy HalloWayne
Nearly 3,000 witches, fairies, princesses and superheroes filled the streets of Wayne
last week during the second annual HalloWayne event, organized by Destination
Wayne. Organizers estimate that with parents, nearly 7,000 people attended the event
which saw the distribution of more than 100,000 pieces of candy, a laser light show
and an outdoor family movie. Visitors came from as far away at Taylor, Northville and
Royal Oak to enjoy the event, sponsored by Wayne-Westland Federal Credit Union,
Rush Trucking, Mark Chevrolet and Willie's Locksmith. The Destination Wayne
Committee members have already set Oct. 26, 2013 for the event next year.
