NKSTER
Blanchette Middle School to be razed
A celebration of the 50th
anniversary of the City of Inkster
is planned for 6 p.m. Nov. 15 at the
Booker T. Dozier Recreation
Complex.
The Golden Anniversary
Celebration Dinner will include
an appearance by Inkster resident
Jeralean Talley, 115, the oldest
woman living in the United States
and the second oldest person liv-
ing in the world. Talley will be the
guest of honor at the celebration.
The keynote speaker will be
the Rev. Oscar Carter, pastor of
Springhill Baptist Church and the
master of ceremonies for the
event will be the Rev. Joseph
Stephens, pastor of New Birth
Baptist Church in Inkster. The
group, One Accord, will also par-
ticipate in the entertainment for
the evening.
Tickets for the event must be
purchased in advance and no tick-
ets will be available at the door. To
purchase tickets, $35 each, contact
Event Chairman City Councilman
Timothy Williams, (734) 748-0302,
Co- chair RuthWilliams, (734) 635-
6000 or Committee Secretary
Theola Jones, (313) 561-3918.
The Recreation Center is locat-
ed at 2025 Middlebelt Road in
Inkster.
The abandoned Blanchette
Middle School in Inkster will fall
to the wrecking ball and the land
sold to pay debts owed by the for-
mer Inkster School District.
The Inkster district was dis-
solved by the State of Michigan in
June 2013 and the building has
been empty since then. Inkster stu-
dents were transferred to the
Wayne-Westland, Romulus, Taylor
and Dearborn Heights districts
which were also awarded the
school buildings that fell in their
respective new enrollment bound-
aries designated by the Regional
Educational Service Agency
(RESA).
Blanchette area students and
the building were assigned to the
Wayne-Westland Community
Schools District and members of
the board of education voted last
week to have RESA officials desig-
nate a contractor to demolish
Blanchette.
Jim Larson-Shidler, deputy
superintendent for business serv-
ices for the Wayne Westland
schools, told the board members
that basic repairs to Blanchette
would have cost more than $1.5
million. He said that Wayne
Westland continued to maintain
utilities and security at Blanchette
but hasmade no repairs due to the
"terrible disrepair" of the building.
He added that the number of stu-
dents enrolled at Wayne Westland
from the Inkster district overall
would not justify the necessary
repair costs to make the building
safe and repurposing was not
financially viable.
The cost of the demolition is
estimated at $515,000 and will be
paid from a state fund established
to pay operational costs related to
the dissolution of the Inkster dis-
trict. Officials said that $372,000 of
the total demolition cost will be for
asbestos removal at the building.
Board Secretary Carol Middel
said she felt it was unfortunate
that Inkster residents were not
made aware of the poor condition
of the Blanchette building, partic-
ularly since area residents have a
strong emotional tie to the build-
ing.
There will be some Christmas
magic in Wayne today and tomor-
row.
The First Congregational
Church of Wayne will host the
68th annual Christmas Fair,
Magical Christmas, from 9 a.m.
until 8 p.m. today, Nov. 6 and
tomorrow.
"We have many booths display-
ing items made by members of
our congregation throughout the
year. Booths include homemade
candy, Christmas wreaths, deco-
rated trees and gifts," said Fair
Publicity Chairperson Joan
Watson.
Watson added that there will
also be a boutique displaying
many handmade gift items and a
Country Store selling homemade
baked goods, jams, jellies and
snack items. There will also be
wooden bowls, lamps vases and
other wooden items made by
members of the church men's
club, a Specialties Shop offering
handmade aprons of all kinds
and a special collection of kitchen
knives that have been in demand
for years.
"This year we are also featur-
ing a children's store that will
contain items that children can
purchase as gifts for family mem-
bers at a very reasonable price.
The room will also contain an
activity area for children," she
said.
The Coffee Shop in the Church
Parlor will be open from 9 a.m.
until 3 p.m. so shoppers can rest
and enjoy a cup of coffee or tea
and cookies, Watson said. The fee
will be only a free-will donation.
"Our church is well known for
the delicious meals prepared by
our kitchen crew. They will serve
lunch from 11 a. m. until 1 p.m.
and dinner from 5-7 p.m. both
days. Lunches will be priced per
item and dinner cost is $9 for
adults and $4 for children,"
Watson added.
The church is located a 2
Towne Square, near the intersec-
tion of Michigan Avenue and
Wayne Road in Wayne. For more
information, call the church
office at (734) 729-7550.
