Jaycees collecting cards,
goods for overseas troops
There are thousands of servicemen and
women in Iraq and Afghanistan who will not
behome for Christmas.
The Westland Jaycees are hoping to bring
a little bit of home to them, as they have for
the past four years.
Jaycee members will be at the Westland
Mall from 6 a.m. until 8 p.m. Nov. 25 for the
annual Holiday Card Signing for Our Troops.
This will be the fifth year for this Jaycee
project and according to Chairperson Debi
Goetz, the goal this year is to send 1,500 cards
to troops. "We need your help," Goetz said.
"We will also be collecting the following
items to sendwithour care package:
•PhoneCards (This is themost requested
item; so servicemen andwomen can
phone loved ones)
•Visa andM/C gift cards
•WetWipes, individuallywrapped in foil
packets (not gel bottles)
•Chap stick, floss, toothbrushes, disposable
razors -men andwomen's
•Breathmints, candy and gum
Goetz suggested that teachers could have
students make cards and bring them in and
that nurses and doctors could have every-
one in their offices sign a card and bring
themin.
Cards will be available for signing during
the event.
"If you are bringing signed cards, please
leave them unsealed. This is a requirement
for all of the armed service branches, " Goetz
said.
Cards and other gift items can be dropped
off before Nov. 25 at Westland Chamber of
Commerce office, 36900 Ford Road, or Men

It's official
State Sen. Glenn S. Anderson, who currently represents Michigan's 6th State Senate
District, formally announced his candidacy for Michigan's 13th Congressional District
in November 2012. He made the announcement across from the Ford Assembly com-
plex in the City of Wayne that produces the Ford Focus. "This is where I started my
working life 39 years ago when I became a member of the UAW building American
vehicles," Anderson said. "For 54 years, thousands of workers here have received a
good wage, health care and have been able to provide for their families with a better
future. In turn that has allowed them to buy homes and cars and put their kids through
college. Today, that future is under attack from all sides and I am deeply concerned
that our leaders aren't doing enough to turn things around." Created by the most
recent redistricting process, the 13th Congressional district includes part of Detroit and
Dearborn Heights and the entirety of River Rouge, Ecorse, Melvindale, Redford,
Westland, Garden City, Inkster, Wayne, and Romulus. Anderson currently represents
all of Westland, Garden City and Redford.
Correction
Last week a photo on the front page was
incorrectly identified as theMarvelettes, one
of the first groups of girl singers to be signed
withMotownRecords.
The women are being honored on the
50th anniversary of the group by the City of
Inkster at 6 p.m. Nov. 11. On hand will be
original members Juanita Motley, Wanda
Young and Katherine Anderson-Schaffner.
Their songwriter, Georgia Dobbins, who
wrote their gold record hit, Please Mr.
Postman, is also expected at the event. It was
incorrectly reported last week that Dobbins
also wrote Don't Mess With Bill, another
gold-record song for the group.
Entertainment for the evening will be by the
Commodores and other well-known enter-
tainers.
The event will take place at the Inkster
High School auditorium and tickets are $10
if purchased in advance and $15 the night of
the event.
The three original singers expected at the
event still live in Inkster while songwriter
Dobbins is aWestland resident.
