Plymouth High School junior
softball standout Elaine Gerou
signed on to play with the Lady
Cardinals at Concordia University
next year.
Gerouwas one of three recruits
signed and will be wearing red
and black starting in the fall of
2013. The daughter of Mike and
Jane Gerou, she is primarily a
pitcher but can play throughout
the infield and outfield, according
to a statement fromthe college.
At Plymouth, Gerou earned her
varsity letter her freshman season
and was named Freshman Athlete
of the Year for Plymouth, Canton
and Salem high schools. She has
earned KLAA All-District honors
twice and All-Conference once
with her senior year still to come.
Gerouhas also had an outstanding
travel ball career. She was named
to the USSSA All-State Team in
2008, 2009 and 2010. She led her
team to a 2nd place finish in the
World Series @ Disney Wide
World of Sports and was named
USSSA World Series Offensive
MVP. Gerou most recently threw
two one hit shut outs in the 2012
NSA World Series in South
Carolina.
Assistant Coach Zach Johnston
said, “She (Elaine) is a tremen-
dous student and her intelligence
shows both in the classroom and
on the field. On the mound she is
able to mix things up and change
locations. She throws multiple
pitches that bounce around both
sides of the plate. Because of her
excellent success in locating her
pitches she stays ahead of hitters,
a necessary quality in being a
dominant pitcher. We have an
unbelievable recruiting class com-
ing in 2013 and Elaine is a huge
part in that. As a staff we are
extremely excited.”
Canton Township officials estimate the
savings this year in costs for snowplowing
roadsmay be asmuch as 90 percent.
The savings is the result of a decision by
the
Michigan
Department
of
Transportation to declare several roads in
the township as primary, rather than sec-
ondary, which will move the responsibility
for plowing fromthe township to the state.
The cost was formerly paid by Canton
and Wayne County. County crews will con-
tinue to perform the snowplowing work,
but the bill will now go to the state. The
roads had previously been under the juris-
diction of the county, but Canton Township
had been paying half the snowplowing cost
for more than 20 years. Canton officials had
been making the payments in an effort to
ensure that the roads had a higher priority
for plowing, thereby making them safer for
drivers during snowfalls.
Last year, the township cost for snow-
plowing was $47,479. Officials estimate that
cost will be $4966 this year with the new
roaddesignations.
The state will fund snow removal costs
for Lilley Road between Ford and
Michigan Avenue, for Sheldon Road
between Ford and Michigan Avenue, Lotz
Road from Ford to Warren and Denton
Road from Geddes to Cherry Hill, from
Mott to Geddes and Cherry Hill to Ridge
Road.
The new designations are effective
immediately and any upcoming snow
removal will be fundedby the state.
A man and woman will stand trial in
the death of a 20-month-old baby in their
care in a Canton Township home last
June.
Wayne County Prosecutor Kym L.
Worthy has charged Ryan Keith Moody,
25, of Monroe, and Andrea Nicole
Rodgers, 20, of Canton, with Involuntary
Manslaughter, a 15-year felony, and
Child Abuse Second Degree, a 4-year
felony.
Worthy charged in court documents
that on June 9, 2012, at approximately
6:38 a.m. Canton police officers were
dispatched to a home located in the
45900 block of Maben in Canton
because a 20-month-old male child was
not breathing.
The child was transported to a local
hospital by Canton rescue and was pro-
nounceddead on arrival.
While under the care of Moody and
Rodgers, Worthy alleges, the child
ingested medication that caused his
death.
The defendants were arraigned last
week at the 35th District Court in
Plymouth and bond was set at 10 per-
cent of $10,000 for each. The details of
the case will be presented at the prelim-
inary examination scheduled for tomor-
rowat the same court.
