Annual raffle will help 100 families at holidays
The Inkster Legends are
attempting to live up to their
name again this year with the
help they offer more 100 local
families at theholidays.
The annual raffle which sup-
ports the 2015 Christmas
Giveaway is now under way and
$10 tickets are nowon sale.
Fred Smiley, the director of
the group, said that the increased
need in the community has
prompted an early start on sales.
“Last year, we were able to
help 200 children in 52 families,”
he said.
Smiley said that the help from
Meijer and Kroger is phenome-
nal and an integral part of the
effort, as well as several other
sponsors who donate to the
effort.
“Last year we had a single
mother with nine children and
another single mom with seven
children,” Smiley said. “These
are people who really need our
help.”
The effort is funded complete-
ly by donations, the raffle and
sponsorships, Smiley, who oper-
ates the Inkster Legends
Basketball Camps said.
The $10 raffle ticket offers a
chance at the first prize of two
tickets to see the Jan. 29 Detroit
Pistons game against LeBron
James and the Cleveland
Cavaliers.
Second prize in the $10 raffle
is four tickets to the Jan. 2
Harlem Globetrotters perform-
ance at the Palace of Auburn
Hills. Third prize is a 24-inch flat
screen TV and fourth prize is a
case of ChoiceT-bone steaks.
The raffle will also award four
dinner prizes including dinner
for two at Urban Soul, dinner for
two at They Say, dinner for two at
Big Bear Lodge and a $30 gift
certificate forRedLobster.
The winners of the raffle will
be announced during the tele-
vised regular meeting of the
Inkster City Council in
December, Smiley said.
For details about the raffle or
to purchase tickets, contact
Smiley at (734) 890-2478.
One Romulus veteran received a ges-
ture of appreciation for his 22 years of
service last month as a small army of vol-
unteers descended on his home to make
repairs.
Gerald Wendland served in the U.S.
Army formore than 22 years and is a veter-
an of Vietnam. He suffers from diabetes
and the disease cost him one of his legs.
His declining health severely limited his
ability to care for his Goddard Road home
which was originally built in 1893, and has
been inhis family for several generations.
When officials from Westside
Distributors came to the city searching for
a community service project to sponsor,
Mayor LeRoy Burcroff assigned the task of
finding a project to the Ordinance,
Building and Community Services depart-
ments where personnel searched for city
homes where owners were in need of help
with maintenance due to health or finan-
cial circumstances.
They suggested Wendland's home
which was the unanimous choice of city
officials.
There was a great deal of work neces-
sary at the Wendland home before the vol-
unteers could even begin the painting.
Rolling Thunder Chapter 5 members, city
employees and members of local St. John's
Lodge #44 were busy for two weeks prior
to the painting removing extensive and
overgrown brush which covered most of
the home's exterior, power washing to
remove old paint, and repairing and
replacing rottenwood on the structure.
“Mr. Wendland's military service and
dedication to our city made him an out-
standing candidate for this project,” said
Robert McCraight, director of Public
Services and Veterans Outreach
Committee Chair for the City of Romulus,
and member of local veterans support
group, RollingThunder Chapter 5.
Volunteers were finally able to begin
painting at the home on Sept. 24 and more
than 40 volunteers from Westside
Distributor's volunteered their own time to
complete the renovations at the home.
“Community involvement is one of our
company-wide core values. We are a
Romulus-based company, so we wanted to
give back to our base through a hands-on
project to get our whole team involved,”
said Tom Manor, sales manager for
WestsideDistributors.
“This was a great example of the kinds
of partnerships we are looking for from
our local businesses. Just like our motto
says, 'Industry and its citizens working
together',” saidBurcroff. “If there are other
businesses or organizations that wish to do
similar projects, I encourage them to con-
tactmy office at (734) 942-7571.”
“My home was built in 1893 and I was
happy and thankful to see the community
come together to help me take care of it,”
said a grateful Wendland as he admired
the completedproject.
Mayor LeRoy D. Burcroff, left, home-
owner Gerald Wendland, Romulus
Community Outreach Liaison and
Project Co-Manager Chris Dunn and
Romulus Director of Public Services,
Chair of Veterans Outreach
Committee and member of Rolling
Thunder Chapter 5Robert McCraight
were all smiles at the repairs to the
historic Goddard Road home,
shown before the volunteers' work in
photo at left.
