New foundation dedicated to helping kids
A charitable foundation
designed to help children in the
Romulus area is picking up
steam.
The JORY Foundation, start-
ed by Romulus resident Robert
McLachlan, has hosted a few
fundraisers and quietly made an
impact on the lives of children
in the community.
“It's been a big dreamof mine
to start a foundation and give
back to the community,” said
McLachlan, who is also a mem-
ber of the Romulus Community
Schools Board of Education.
“We were blessed with being
able to provide food, shelter,
clothing and educational oppor-
tunities for my two sons-not
every family has that.”
The JORY Foundation seeks
to help youth who are either
financially or socially disadvan-
taged. The foundation is named
after McLachlan's sons,
Jonathon and Rory. It was
founded in 2015, but health
issues slowed his efforts for the
first year. Even so, McLachlan
said he has contributed funds to
help children attend field trips
through the YMCA, provided
instruments for children at Wick
and Hale Creek elementary
schools in Romulus and, most
recently, paid for a refurbished
clarinet so a sixth grader could
take the band class shewanted.
“We do all kinds of little small
stuff,” said McLachlan, who
added that the small size of the
organization helps in that way.
“We candistribute funds directly
without any administrative
costs. We have no administrative
costs, so everything goes back to
the community.”
The foundation is putting on
a free anti-bullying and suicide
prevention seminar from 7-9
p.m. Oct. 24 at Romulus High
School. The event, sponsored by
the Romulus police and fire
departments as well as the
Wayne County Community
College District - Ted Scott
Campus and Skateland West,
will feature Cheryl Jones,
founder of LifeCycle Family
Counseling. Her speech will
focus on how to identify strug-
gling young people andwhat can
be done tohelp them.
McLachlan is also planning
the next fundraiser for the
organization, a dueling piano
show that will take place Nov. 18
at the Taylor Democratic Club
onWickRoad.
He said he's happy with the
way things have gone so far, and
is looking for additional corpo-
rate sponsors so the foundation
can expand its reach in the com-
munity.
“It's been a good rollout; I feel
good about it,” he said. “I just
hope it's successful. The commu-
nities need towork together.”
