3rd Annual Sound Garden event Saturday
Students are finalists
for scholarship funds
Re-enactors to
visit Belleville
Summit On the Park offers special membership event
The trails will be alive with the
sound of music on Saturday as
Canton Leisure Services hosts the
3rd Annual Sound Garden. The
event features an afternoon of
music and art along the Lower
Rouge Trail and is open to the pub-
lic at no cost fromnoonuntil 3 p.m.
Live musical entertainment
includes performances by Bob and
Carl, Kevin Devine, Joe Reilly,
Betsy Beckerman, and Ryan Brake.
In addition, guests are welcome to
watch one of several artist demon-
strations, including Raku ware by
Robert Bielat, Daniel Borton and
David Parr. This is a type of
Japanese pottery historically used
during formal tea ceremonies and
noted for its smoke-like smudges,
Raku pottery is created via a
unique firing and glazing tech-
nique.
There will also be pottery, by the
Village Potters Guild and En plein
air painting by D&M Art Studio of
Canton. En plein is a French
expression describing the act of
painting outdoors to consider natu-
ral light and is often associatedwith
artists Vincent van Gogh, Claude
Monet andPierre-AugusteRenoir.
Children are encouraged to par-
ticipate in a scavenger hunt with
borrowed supplies from Canton
Leisure Services' Nature Nook and
local vendor Cruisin' Custom
Coneys will also be onsite selling
hot dogs, beverages, chips, and
cookies.
“These scenic trails provide a
beautiful backdrop for everyone to
experience an afternoon of memo-
rable music and inspiring art,” said
Jennifer Provenzano, recreation
specialist. “Canton residents are
encouraged to walk the trails dur-
ing this event and enjoy the sights
and sounds of these talented local
artists in a very unique setting.”
In 2011 the Michigan Recreation
and Parks Association presented
the Canton Sound Garden event
with a Pro-Grammy Award for Best
Trail Program. The trails are dog-
friendly but pets must be on a leash
at all times.
The Lower Rouge Trail, located
on Michigan Avenue at Morton
Taylor Road, was constructed in
2007 to meet the residential
demands for additional outdoor
recreational opportunities within
the Canton Community. For more

Students from Belleville and
Canton High School are among the
semifinalists in the 2013 National
Achievement
Scholarship
Program, according to a
spokesman for the organization.
Alexander L. Beglau of
Belleville High School and Audrey
C. Johnson, who attends Canton
High School are among 1,600 high
school seniors who have been des-
ignated semifinalists in the 49th
scholarship program. They will
now compete for 800 Achievement
Scholarship awards.
To be considered for a National
Achievement Scholarship, students
must be among the highest-scoring
entrants on the Preliminary SAT
test taken when they are juniors.
To continue and reach the finalist
level, the students and the high
school must submit a detailed
scholarship application.
The Summit on the Park will
host a special Membership
Appreciation fall event from 6-9
p.m. nextMonday, Oct. 8.
Members are encouraged to
dust off their cowboy boots, pull
out their 10-gallon hats and scoot
on over to the Banquet and
Conference Center to enjoy light
refreshments and take part in a
good old-fashioned square dance.
No partner or experience
required. The square dance caller
will teach participants all the
moves and offer full instructions.
"We thoroughly appreciate our
members," said Recreation and
Facilities Operation Supervisor
Sean Fletcher. "We value their
business and loyalty, and this is our
way of giving back to them."
Summit members can also
enter for a chance to win Village
Theater tickets and Summit on the
Park gift cards. The first 150 guests
will also receive a Western
Bandana.

The Belleville Area Museum
will host the Civil War
Reenactment Weekend at Van
Buren Park from 11 a.m. until 7
p.m. Oct. 6 and from 11 a.m. until 3
p.m. Oct. 7.

Daily admission is $3 per per-
son or $5 for a weekend pass per
person. Weekend family passes are
available for $15.
Police contract gets OK
Van Buren Township Trustees
unanimously approved a union
contract with police officers,
retroactive to Jan. 1, 2010 and
effectiveuntil Dec. 31, 2013.
The vote of the board came
following approval of the con-
tract with the Police Officers
Labor Council Command
Contract by a vote of the mem-
bership.
Included in the contract is a
wage freeze although active offi-
cers will receive a $750 signing
bonus from July 2012 and a $500
bonus in July of next year.
Employees will now contribute
10 percent of the cost of their
health insurance and an adjust-
ment in the prescription drug
coverage. There were also
changes in the procedure
involved in offering overtime to
officers.
Maximum sick time officers
will be allowed to accumulate
will be 400 hours and the maxi-
mum compensatory time they
can accumulate is now limited to
72 hours.
