Plymouth-Canton School
unions accept new contract
Union members employed in the
Plymouth-Canton Community Schools
agreed to wage and benefit conces-
sions whichwill save the district near-
ly $6million this contract year.
The largest concessions came from
teachers in the district who have
agreed to contract provisions requir-
ing them to pay 20 percent of their
health care premiums. The district
had been paying 100 percent of the
monthly premium for every eligible
union member. The teachers also
agreed to pay deductible fees with a
newprovider, $100 for in-network care
and $200 for out-of-network care. They
will also pay a co-insurance fee of
$500 for in network and $1,000 for out-
of-network.
The 20 percent paid by the individ-
ual insureds will save the district
about $3 million and the change in
carrier should save the district about
$900,000, school officials said.
Members of the licensed techni-
cians union, custodial maintenance
and paraprofessionals also agreed to
concessions in the new contracts,
approved by the members of the
school board last week. These district
employees also agreed to one unpaid
furloughday during the year.
Contracts with school administra-
tors, secretaries, food service workers,
plant engineers and garage and secu-
rity staff unions have not yet been
finalized and negotiations with those
groups continue, a spokesperson said.
