Families and patrons came out to enjoy
Canton Public Library's 62 Days of Summer
Final Party recently, along with sheep, rab-
bits, ducks, alpacas, a horse, a calf and a don-
key.
Spending time with animals was just one
of the many activities at the event, attended
by approximately 450 people.
“We have put so much love into these two
months! We had towrap it upwith a celebra-
tion of the best 62 days of the year,” said
NicholeWelz, programlibrarian.
Music by MatthewBall entertained atten-
dees as they got books from the Friends of
the Canton Public Library to take home;
made their way to a photo booth; played in a
bounce house; got henna or face paint; were
wowed by a roaming magician and won
prizes at themarble run. In theMad Science
booth, participants made bouncing polymer
superballs. Treats included cookies courtesy
of Sweetwaters Coffee and Tea, hot dogs and
ice cream.
The Final Party capped off 62 Days of
Summer, a string of activities that encour-
aged patrons tomake themost of the season.
Starting in June, the library provided daily
reading lists and programs. There was a yo-
yo demonstration, movies and a baby drive-
in, flower arranging, an escape room, book
dominoes, ice cream tasting, an Elvis tribute
artist and more, helping patrons make sum-
mer the best part of their year.
Library visitors were especially interest-
ed in earning pom-poms for reading and
participation. They raced to fill a clear bin at
the library main entrance with as many as
possible before summer's end. Pom-poms
were given out for activities, programs, staff
help and talking to librarians about recently
readbooks orwatchedmovies.
The Prize Patrol was also a successful
component of the 62 Days. Library staff went
on five runs looking for Library Lovers yard
signs, handing out bags of goodies to loyal
patrons.
The library workedwith community part-
ners Friends of the Canton Public Library,
Busch's Fresh Food Market, Airtime
Trampoline and Game Park, Emagine
Canton, Skatin Station, Sweetwater's Coffee
and Tea, Zap Zone, Canton Leisure Services,
Super Bowl, Community Financial Credit
Union, Tony Sacco's Coal Oven Pizza and
Chipotle Mexican Grill, to make 62 Days of
Summer happen.
The Canton Public Library is located at
1200 S. Canton Center Road in Canton. Visit

Motorists and passengers in
larger vehicles will be safer in
Canton Township now that a
Highway Vehicle Stabilization
Kit purchase for the fire depart-
ment has been OK'd by members
of the Township Board of
Trustees.
“Thiswill stabilize the vehicle.
These don't actually do any cut-
ting,” said Deputy Chief/Fire
Chris Stoecklein about the equip-
ment, prior to the meeting. “It's
more or less stabilization sticks.”
The $17,500 purchase from
Apollo Fire Equipment will be
used at crashes involving larger
vehicles like garbage trucks or
the cab of a semi-conductor.
Township public safety officials
noted current fire department
equipment onlyworks on passen-
ger-sized vehicles.
“We'll be the first to have this
size of stabilization kit,” in the
region, explained Canton Public
Safety Director Joshua Meier.
Canton could be called through
mutual aid pacts to help other
communities like Westland and
Northville Township, Meier said
in responding to a question from
Trustee Anne Marie Graham-
Hudak.
“We keep track of who helps
who when,” noted Canton
Township Supervisor Pat
Williams, during the Sept. 11
meeting, adding in the last cou-
ple years Canton has been more
a recipient ofmutual aidhelp.
Stoecklein said the equipment
protects rescuers, “so we can
start working on the patient as
soon as possible. We do see a lot
of heavy vehicle traffic, especial-
ly on the expressway. It's more
precautionary, just to give some
safety to those rescuers and the
victim.”
Stoecklein noted there haven't
been many issues to date with
such vehicles, noting the popula-
tion growth in Canton Township
and resulting traffic volume
prompted officials to recom-
mend the purchase.
