Toys donated to Bark For Life
Henri, a 4-year-old Basenji owned by
Jill Young, a Bark for Life participant/ven-
dor and committee member, is donating
85 stuffed toys to the event.
Young explained that Henri accumu-
lated the toys over several months as gifts
from a neighbor who is exceptionally
good at getting them out of the machines
at the grocery stores.
“They started to pile up, so I thought
who could we give these to and then it
came to me that we could give them to
BarkFor Life,” Young said.
“When Henri gets a new toy, he carries
it home from the neighbor's house and we
put it away in a big plastic bag for Bark for
Life. So, anyone who would like to have
one of Henri's donated toys, should come
to Bark for Life Saturday Sept. 20 and
make a donation of $1or more and you
will get a stuffed toy, while they last,” she
said.
Bark for Life recognizes the care giving
qualities and unconditional love our dogs
provide to us, Young added. “When we
had an overabundance of stuffed toys, it
was an easy choice to donate them to
Bark For Life. And yes Henri does keep a
few for himself,” she said.
The American Cancer Society Bark
For LifeTM is a noncompetitive walk
event for dogs and their owners to raise
funds and awareness for the American
Cancer Society's fight against cancer.
“By supporting Bark For Life, you help
the American Cancer Society save lives,
and that helps us move closer to our ulti-
mate goal of a world with less cancer and
more birthdays.
“So bring your best canine friend and
join us for a fun-filled day starting with a
walk, and then continuing with demon-
strations, contests, and games,” Young
concluded.
Bark For Life will take place from 11
a.m. until 3 p.m. this Saturday, Sept. 20 at
Heritage Park inCanton. Registrationwill

substance. Possession or distribution of
the synthetic cathinone is a violation of
Canton Township local ordinance Section
46-270 and is illegal under state law.
“They are not the bath salts you use in
your tub,” police said in a prepared state-
ment.
“These are powerful illegal drugs that
have not been tested for safety, and users
don't really know exactly what chemicals
they are putting into their bodies. The
side effects they cause may be perma-
nent,” police said.
Poison center experts say these sub-
stances are among the most dangerous
they have seen. Users have experienced
many side effects such as: paranoia and
violent behavior; hallucinations; delu-
sions; suicidal thoughts; seizures; panic
attacks; increased blood pressure and
heart rate; chest pain, nausea and vomit-
ing
Police said that anyone suspecting
another person of taking bath salts or any
synthetic drug should dial 911 immediate-
ly.
Persons responsible for the distribu-
tion of these substances which result in
serious medical conditions or death will
be prosecuted in accordance with
Michigan state law, police said.
The Plymouth-Canton Community
Schools issued a statement last week
announcing a two-part seminar co-spon-
sored by Growth Works, Inc. titled Teens
Using Drugs: What To Know andWhat To
Do from 7-8:30 p.m. Oct. 8 and 15 at the
CantonHighSchoolMediaCenter.
“We are very concerned about students
in our community using “Cloud 9” or any
substance. Our attention to this matter
has been heightened by two instances at
P-CEP in the past two days,” the prepared
statement sent to district parents read.
“We encourage you to discuss the dangers
and illegality of drugs and alcohol, and
the importance of good decision making
and consequences with your children. We
take student safety very seriously and
look forward to your continued partner-
ship and support. If you have additional
questions or concerns, please reach out to
your child's assistant principal,” the dis-
trict said in a prepared statement to par-
ents last week following the incidents.
