An alternative career choice is helping patients
Not all healthcare careers are centered in
an examining room. There is a great need for
people to impact patients and their families
throughmedical insurance, billing, and office
administration.
This career path entails assembling
patients' health information including med-
ical history, symptoms, examination results,
diagnostic tests, treatment methods, and all
other healthcare provider services.
Technicians organize and manage health
information data by ensuring its quality, accu-
racy, accessibility, and security. They regular-
ly communicate with physicians and other
healthcare professionals to clarify diagnoses
or to obtain additional information.
Medical billers submit claims to the insur-
ance companies that pay doctors and other
healthcare providers for the services they
provide patients. The process also involves
medical coding, which assigns universal code
numbers to all known medical conditions,
diagnoses, and procedures. Medical coding
ensures that each condition and treatment
appearing in a patient's medical records is
universally understandable to any doctor or
insurance company representative in the
country.
According to the Bureau of Labor
Statistics, employment of medical records
and health information technicians is expect-
ed to increase by 20% through 2018. As the
population continues to age, the number of
health-related problems will continue to rise.
As a result, the number of medical tests, treat-
ments, and procedures required for the pop-
ulationwill increase.
This career path is gratifying because
although you may never interact with
patients, your tasks directly affect them. By
processing and reviewing claims to reim-
bursement, you are making certain that all of
their complex paperwork is in order so that
they have the best chance of getting their
healthcare covered by insurance. And in this
economy, every dollarmatters.
Due to the increasing rate of medical tests,
treatments, and procedures that will fall
under scrutiny of health insurance compa-
nies, regulators, and consumers, the demand
for qualified billing and coding professionals
has never been higher. And candidates that
demonstrate a strong understanding of tech-
nology and computer software will be in par-
ticularly highdemand.
Those seeking employment in this reward-
ing field should enter a program at a career
training school that teaches insurance claim
submission andmanagement, HIPAA compli-
ance, health insurance regulations, insurance
fraud issues, customer service skills, and
basic office procedures.

Engine Company #39 and
Company #45 are no different is
this respect than the fighters who
work and live in our community
every day.
This is a time to pay homage to
those brave men and women who
lost their lives doing their job of
protecting others. However, its also
a time to reflect an appreciate
those who serve us every day, put-
ting their lives at risk at amoment's
notice. May God bless each and
every one.

and make terrible, horrific mis-
takes. It's part of the human condi-
tion and any thinking adult under-
stands it.
But being young, having imma-
ture brain capacity, is no excuse,
ever, to endanger others.
Not ever.
Had this young person been
apprehended by police, hospital-
ization would probably have been
followedby jail anddeservedly so.
The drunk driving laws in this
state, judges always say, are in
place to protect everyone on the
road, the driver and other
motorists.
They're also there, I suspect, to
protectmany of us fromourselves.
political strategy is: All politics is
local. We think that's very, very true.
Candidates and political consult-
ants watch community races and
voting trends to determine just
what they can do and say to win
higher offices, based on what vot-
ers do locally. Cynical, but true,
they try to ascertain exactly what
they can get awaywith.
We've all been fooled by clever
political rhetoric and tactics, after
all, we are human. We just don't
want our communities to suffer at
the hands of those who seek elect-
ed office for their own self aggran-
dizement or ego rather than with a
sincere desire to serve the public
and the community.
We've been fooled before----let's
take the time to be sure we choose
candidates who represent our best
interests this time around.
We have until Nov. 8----let's
spend the timewisely.
