Mystery on Tipping Point stage
The Mystery of Irma Vep by Charles

Vendors for expo sought
Preparations are under way for the 2011
Women's Expo in Canton and organizers are
seeking vendors for the event. Local mer-
chants with a product or service targeted
specifically towardwomen can exhibit at the
upcoming event from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Nov.
12 at the Summit on the Park, located at
46000 Summit Parkway inCanton.
Organizers said hundreds of women
attend the popular shopping event and
unique and locallymade items arewelcome.
Vendor applications will be accepted
through Sept. 30. Start-up companies are
encouraged to apply.

PlymouthHigh School reunion planned
The Plymouth High School Class of 1956
is planning a pair of reunions for September.
The 55th reunion is set for 6 p.m. Sept. 10
at Karl's Cabin restaurant and an all school
reunion will take place from noon until 5
p.m. at the Plymouth Elks Lodge, 41700 Ann
ArborRoad, on the south side of Plymouth.
The class of 1956 has sponsored this event
every five years for some time and more
than 500 alumni, faculty members and staff
attended five years ago.
Reservations are not required. There will
be a $6 per person admission fee at the door
which includes a picnic-style buffet lunch.

Public Safety Awareness Day set
The Van Buren Public Safety chaplains
have planned a Public Safety Appreciation
Day from noon until 2 p.m. Sept. 10 at Open
Arms Lutheran church next to Belleville
FireStationno. 2.
The event will include a pig roast lunch-
eon and all public safety employees and
their families will be admitted free, as will
all children 7 and younger. Others will be
asked for a $3 donation which will go to
charitable funds set upby the chaplains.
The chaplains have urged all residents of
Van Buren, Belleville and Sumpter to attend
the event.

Pilgrims take to the sky
The Flying Pilgrims, a member of the
Academy of Model Aeronautics, will host a
model air show from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.
Sept. 10 and 11 at the corner of Geddes and
Ridge roads inCantonTownship.
Admission is free although here will be a
$5 parking donation requested which will
admit all occupants of the car.
This is the 28th anniversary showandwill
feature the giant scale aircraft and must be
at least one-quarter size the real aircraft.
Some of the models can reach speeds of
more than 100m.p.h.

Westland hostsmemorial service
At 11 a.m. Sunday, the City of Westland
will host a 9/11Memorial Service commemo-
rating the 10-year anniversary on the south
steps of Westland City Hall, located at 36601
Ford Road. This marks the eighth year for
the service, which remembers those who
perisheddue to the attacks onSept. 11, 2001,
as well as honors members of our Armed
Forces and those who continue to serve and
protect the community.
Pastor Kurt E. Lambart of St. Matthew
Lutheran Church and School in Westland
will preside at the memorial service, which
will include performances by the St.
Matthew Jubilee and Cherub Choirs as well
as theLutheranHighWestlandChoir.
Senior Summit is planned
Canton Township Supervisor Phil LaJoy
will host a Senior Summit from 8:30 a.m.
until 2 p.m. Sept. 12 at the Summit on the
Park.
LaJoy began the event as a State
Representative and has continued it for
Canton seniors. The event will feature a
wide array of informational booths and pre-
sentations for seniors. There will also be
door prizes, a continental breakfast, lunch
andbingo.
The event is free, however a ticket, avail-
able at both the supervisor's office and the
senior center at the Summit on the Park, is
required.

Wayne County Commissioner Joan
Gebhardt (D-District12) will have office

Benefits for veterans is topic
The Canton Community Foundation is
sponsoring the second educational forum
for veterans, veterans' families and their
legal advisors Sept. 14 and 15 at the Laurel
Manor Banquet and Conference Center in
Livonia.

not know are available and other resources
available to former members of the armed

Church hosts grief workshop
Ward Presbyterian Church is sponsoring
an eight-week grief workshop, From Grief to
NewHope beginning onSept. 12.
The free workshop is open to anyone who
is grieving after the death of a loved one and
will be presented by Cathy Clough, founder
and executive director of New Hope Center
for Grief Support. Each session will begin
with a presentation about one aspect of grief
followed by small group participation led by
trained facilitators. Attendees will be placed
in groups with others who have had similar
losses.
The workshop will meet from 7-8:45 p.m.
for eight consecutive Monday nights at Ward
Church located on Six Mile and Haggerty

The Delta Kappa Gamma Education
Society will host the annual juried
Handmade Only Craft Show on from 9 a.m.

GoodGrief Golf Outing set
The 13th Annual Good Grief Golf Outing
will begin at 10 a.m. Sept. 10 at Tanglewood
Golf Club inSouthLyon.
The proceeds fromthis outingwill benefit
New Hope Center for Grief Support, a
bereavement outreach center located in
Northville. New Hope provides free grief
support services and resources to men,
women, teens, and children throughout
southeastern Michigan. The cost for this
four-person scramble, which includes 18
holes of golf with a cart, lunch, dinner, con-
tests, and prizes, is $125. Dinner only is $35
per person.

Canton sets hazardouswaste day
Hazardous Household Waste Day will
take place from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday,
Sept. 10 at the Canton Division of Public
Works Building, located at 4847 Sheldon
Road. This event is open to Canton residents
only and is an opportunity to properly dis-
pose of waste that is considered toxic, flam-
mable, or corrosive.
Examples of acceptable waste being col-
lected Sept. 10 include, but are not limited
to; fluorescent light bulbs, oil-based and
latex paint, paint thinner, turpentine, bug
sprays, floor-care products, expired medi-
cine, computers and scanners, dry cleaning
solvents, rat poison, household batteries,
propane tanks, mercury waste, antifreeze,
brake fluid, diesel fuel, kerosene, motor oil,
and acids.
Please note, Canton will be unable to
accept commercial waste, construction
debris, explosives or ammunition, fire extin-
guishers, firewood, radioactive material,
smoke detectors, televisions and tires. To

Canton hosts preparednessworkshop
To help promote September as National
Preparedness Month, the Canton Township
Emergency Management Office will sponsor
a community preparedness workshop from
7-9 p.m. Sept. 15 at the Summit on the Park.

of charge and designed to train community
members to: identify regional threats affect-
ing them, their family and the community;
be better prepared t function for 72 hours
during a disaster without first responder
assistance; understand how to shelter in
place and when to evacuate and identify
local, regional and national emergency man-
agement and response organizations, and
learn how to get involved in community pre-
paredness.

Chicken supper served
Willow United Methodist Church mem-
bers are planning a chicken supper from 5
until 7 p.m. Sept. 14 at the church, 36925
WillowRoad inNewBoston.
Adult tickets are $9 and children younger
than 12 meals are $5. Supper includes fried
chicken, mashed potatoes, green beans, bis-
cuits and gravy, dinner rolls and dessert
alongwith coffee, hot tea ormilk.

Run for theRouge set
Friends of the Rouge will host the 2nd
Annual Run for the Rouge run/walk along
the Rouge River for runners, walkers and
anyone who cares about the river beginning
at 9 a.m. Sept. 17.
Registration for the 3.1 mile run/walk is
available on the Friends of the Rouge web-
site at www.therouge.org. Volunteers are
also needed to help support the runners and
walkers.
Registration begins at 8 a.m. at
Connection Church, 3855 South Sheldon
Road in Canton for the 9 a.m. start. The run
is timed and prizes will be awarded to the
top female and male finishers and the most
pledges. Participants will be entered into a
post-run raffle (must be present to win) and
are eligible to enter the lottery for the
MackinacBridgeLaborDayRun.
Bingo helps animal shelter
All of the proceeds from the Bingo games
planned at the Romulus Senior Center dur-
ing the Pumpkin Festival this year will go
toward construction costs of the new city
animal shelter.
The games are planned for 5 p.m. until
midnight Sept. 16, noon until midnight Sept.
