Scott Levely of Growth Works
Inc., which offers substance
abuse and juvenile delinquency
prevention regionally, said he is
pleased with an ongoing lease
agreement at the CantonHuman
Services Center near CherryHill
andRidge roads.
“It's a very good arrange-
ment,” said Levely, Growth
Works chief executive officer.
Growth Works has other build-
ings, including its original facility
on Main Street in downtown
Plymouth. Growth Works began
in 1971.
“It's good, especially the
(Canton) Community Found-
ation. It's been a good arrange-
ment not only for Growth Works
but also for the community,”
Levely added. Growth Works has
used the Canton Human
Services Center since 2003.
A three-year lease for the
Canton Human Services Center
was approved Aug. 28 by the
Canton Township Board of
Trustees, with Trustee Anne
Marie Graham-Hudak absent.
The lease will continue through
Sept. 5, 2021.
“They're doing good work,”
said Canton Township Clerk
Michael Siegrist.
The Canton Human Services
Center also houses the
Partnership for the Arts &
Humanities which in 2012
acquired a nearby 14-acre parcel
to servewesternWayne and east-
ern Washtenaw counties. That
nonprofit focuses on both arts
and historic preservation, and is
working to offer services to
returning military veterans,
including women, through the
VillageArtsFactory.
The Canton site, in the Cherry
Hill Village area, also houses
Habitat for Humanity of Western
Wayne County. That Christian
nonprofit works to address
homelessness by rehabbing and
building homes for people, with
the future residents investing
their “sweat equity” in that
effort. Former U.S. President
Jimmy Carter has been heavily
involved in leadership of the
group.
The local Habitat affiliate has
administrative offices in the City
of Wayne and isn't equipped to
serve clients or take donations in
Canton, noted Executive
Director AliceDent.
The Canton Community
Foundation, since 1989, has
worked to enhance philanthropy
in Canton and surrounding com-
munities, according to the group
website. It provides scholar-
ships, programming and other
services.
Canton Township Supervisor
Pat Williams is supportive of the
HumanServices Center.Works.
“It is truly meant to be our
one-stop shopping” for human
services. The lease is $1 per
square foot or $13,893 annually.
Canton uses the rent for building
maintenance and grounds
upkeep.
Siegrist noted federal funds
through the U.S. Department of
Housing
and
Urban
Development factor in reducing
lease costs for Growth Works,
which seeks tenants, pays utili-
ties, and handles building day-to-
day operations. Williams noted
Community Development Block
Grants are factored in so the site
was built “to be a centrally locat-
edHumanServices building.”
Officials have worked out a
plan to assist with the federal
funding formula, and have
praised Growth Works for build-
ing operation work. Of HUD
money, Williams noted “It's not
money we can spend as we
please.”
Trustees also OK'd Aug. 28 a
letter of understanding with the
Michigan Department of
Transportation on the Ford
Road Boulevard work, with
township staff noting it's a
required procedure to begin
road work. It follows the August
primary election approval of a
1.45-mill road millage by voters
inCanton.
In addition, the Canton board
approved two additional absent
voter counting boards with scan-
ners and work stations. Trustee
Sommer Foster asked about use
of scanners in the August Canton
election.
“High-speed scanners are
only as good as the ballots they're
scanning,” noted Siegrist. “There
are some bugs to work out,” but
overall he's pleased with August
primary operation and expects
the Nov. 6 General Election in
Cantonwill gowell for voters.
It's been a good arrangement
not only for Growth Works
but also for the community.
