the filing that they needed to deter-
mine if prosecuting Duhanaj was
in the public interest.
Duhanaj remains in federal cus-
tody and is facing deportation,
according to officials.
Goci, who has served on the
school board since 2009, said he
didn't understand how charges
could continue against him in light
of the decision to drop the charges
against Duhanaj. He said he was
unsure of what evidence the FBI
had about him and that he had
done nothing wrong. He claims he
didhave a loan of $30,000 but that it
did not come from Duhanaj and
that he paid 15 percent interest on
the balance.
“Everything happens for a rea-
son, I guess. I maintain by inno-
cence,” he said.
Goci also said that his under-
standing was that he had not yet
been officially charged and that a
grand jury might have to be con-
vened in the case.
In court complaints, the govern-
ment claimed to have tape record-
ings of Goci being told what to say
toFBI agents byDuhanaj about the
loan. The tapes allegedly recorded
Duhanaj telling Goci to stick to the
15 percent story.
“I intend to cooperate fully with
the FBI,” Goci said. “They (FBI
investigators) questioned me but I
had nothing to do with him
(Duhanaj). It came out in the paper
that he gave me $1,000 (for his con-
gressional campaign) but he also
gave $10,000 to Gary Peters,” Goci
said.
