for the music program was instru-
mental in his being named as the
winner of the Weyand Family
Scholarship which will provide
himwith a full-ride, four-year edu-
cation at the University of
Michigan, Orr said.
“That means even more since
Mr. Weyand was a student here, at
Wayne, in the music program
many years ago,” she said.
“This would never have been
possible without the cooperation
of the community, the students, the
staff and the central office,” Orr
added. “When we were told by the
district office that we could enter
this, they said we would have full
access to the district resources.
Without the help of Drew
(Connor), who is a district employ-
ee, we couldn't have done it.”
Orr said the video was taped in
one day after about two weeks of
planning, a remarkable feat of
technology.
“It couldn't have been done that
way without the incredible focus
of these kids. They are so passion-
ate about this, they listen to direc-
tions intently. At the end of the
video, we have about 150 kids on
stage all at once. You could have
heard a pin drop when we did
that,” Connor said. “That's howdis-
ciplined and focused these kids
are.”
He said it took him about two
days to edit the video into the
piece submitted to Big Lots for the
voting. “I've done a lot of videos for
the district, but this is the first for
any kind of competition. I just took
the interviews from the kids and
beganbuilding a story,” he said.
The students found out they
won about a week or so ago,
Connor said, and the district was
notified about two or three weeks
ago, but Big Lots didn't make it
official until Monday, so it was
kept quiet until the official
announcementMonday.
“The pride the music directors
take in this program and these
kids, the time and energy they
pour into this program is phenom-
enal. Theway the kids speak about
the program…their passion is just
contagious,” Connor said.
“That was the key to the suc-
cess.”
Themoney will be used for uni-
forms, instruments, storage space
and choir risers, exactly the items
the students mentioned as being
needed in the video, which can be
seen at www.biglots.com/lots2give.
