City allocates use
of block grant funds
Members of the Westland City Council
have approved the spending of about
$990,000 in Community Development Block
Grant program funding for the 2013-1014

The largest portion of the funding will be
spent to administer the program, monitor
those who receive funds through the pro-
gram and operate the Dorsey Center in
Norwayne.
A federal program, the funds from the
Community Development Block Grant have
restricted and can only be used for activities
of benefit to low and moderate income fami-
lies, aid in the prevention or elimination of
blight or slum areas or to address a threat to
community healthor safety.
In Westland, the funds will be used to

The council members allocated $105,000
for building code and safety enforcement
and $65,000 for low interest loans for emer-
gency homeowner rehabilitation and elimi-
nation of safety hazards. Another $73,000 will
be used as matching grant funds to rehabili-
tate rental properties in the city.
As part of the neighborhood revitalization
through acquisition effort, the city will use
about $188,000 to pay for and demolish
blighted properties in Norwayne. This
amount will be in addition to the $2 million
in federal Neighborhood Stabilization
Program funding already spent to acquire,
rehabilitate or demolish blighted, foreclosed
properties, many inNorwayne.
About $96,000 will used for housing reha-
bilitation loans to homeowners and $49,000

Students in the Plymouth-Canton,

tricts will continue to learn about the art of
music thanks to a grant from Community
Financial Credit Union.
TheMichigan Philharmonic was provid-
edwith a $1,000 grant fromthe credit union

program, including Koncert for Kids. The
grant is part of the third annual
Community Financial Summer of Sharing
campaign.
CLASSical Music for Kids brings music
to the third grade students in Plymouth-
Canton, Wayne-Westland and Van Buren
schools. The students meet musicians in
the orchestra and learn about their instru-
ments while enjoying performances from
different eras and cultures.
Fourth grade students attend a specially
programmed age-appropriate concert
called, "Koncert for Kids." The students
learn about how the orchestra is put
together, the sound each instrument
makes, andwhat the conductor does.
Students also get to meet composer
Andre Myers, who narrates his own work,
based on the book "Paddle to the Sea." They
also get a conducting lesson and get to sing
with the orchestra.
"Wewere really thrilled to receive one of
the Community Financial award grants for
the education program," said Beth Stewart,
Michigan Philharmonic executive director.
"We really appreciate their support for arts
