OMULUS
The inaugural Roamin' Chrome event in Romulus generated about $1,600 to help vet-
eran's programs in the community and drew all types of vehicles to local spots.
Officers in Van Buren Township issued
49 tickets totaling $24,500 in fines within a
24-hour period earlier this month at the
CobblestoneRidgehousing development.
Van Buren Township Police Lt. Charles
Bazzy, who oversees the ordinance depart-
ment, said he complied with the instruc-
tions of township Supervisor Linda
Combs who authorized the issuance of the
citations at the July 6meeting of the board
of trustees.
Bazzy reported the 49 citations the next
day, including violations for unsafe struc-
tures, property maintenance, blight and
discharge of storm water into the sanitary
sewers at the seven building complex
where construction of three to four town-
houses is planned in each building.
Township trustees complained at the
meeting about the unsecured open base-
ments filled with water and other unsafe
conditions at the unfinished development
which has been under construction for
nearly five years. Earlier this year, com-
plaints about high grass at the site prompt-
ed officials to send a crew from the town-
ship to cut the grass.
Trustees were also shown photos and
video of the development where base-
ments had holes and were not shrink-
wrapped as required in the 2011 agree-
ment with the developer. The developer
was also required to install fencing
around basements that could not be
decked and pump out standing water in
that agreement.
Videos showed a chained gate with a
large gap and cattails growing the base-
ments of some of the home sites where
foundations are cracked.
Bazzy saidhe felt therewere some defi-
nite security and safety issues at the site.
Combs noted that while the township
could fill in the basements and secure the
building sites, the cost estimate for that
work was $600,000, which is more than the
value of the land.
Trustees agreed that developer Brad
Byarski has violated the terms of the 2011
agreement but acknowledged that he now
has 30 days to appear before the board in
response to the violations. Board mem-
bers noted that he has only posted a
$20,000 construction bond limited to road-
work and the cost of demolishing and fill-
ing in the basements, along with disabling
utilities is $73,000 at each site.
The cost of the infractions cited by the
ordinance officers is $500 fine or 90 days
in jail per infraction.
Combs noted that township attorney
Patrick McCauley has been informed of
the violations issued at the site. McCauley
suggested that he speak with attorneys for
Byarski, the owner of Sheldon
Acquisitions, to see if an agreement could
be negotiated. Byarski is reportedly cur-
rently seeking permits to build single-fam-
ily homes in the township. Trustees sug-
gested withholding approval on those to
see if that might prompt action at the
CobblestoneRidge site.
Board members were going to revisit
the issue last week at their regular meet-
ing.
