week.

Former court officer sentenced to probation
Woehlke-Palooza event seeks sponsors, donors
Former
Inkster
City
Councilman Anthony Greene
was sentenced to 18-months pro-
bation and court costs in Wayne
CountyCircuit Court last Friday.
Greene was found guilty of
unauthorized access of a comput-
er May 12 during a bench trial
before Judge Michael Hathaway.
The judge found Greene not
guilty of several other charges
including misconduct in office,
obstruction of justice anduse of a
computer to commit a crime.
The charges stemmed from
Greene's tenure as a court officer
in the 22nd District Court in 2010
during a lawsuit filed by a police
officer against the city.
Prosecutors claimed that during
the trial, Greene accessed the
Inkster city attorney's email
account and printed a defense
strategy memorandum which
was subsequently shared with
the plaintiff in the lawsuit
through another court officer
RonaldWade.
All the charges against Greene
were dismissed in circuit court
in 2011 but prosecutors appealed
that decision. Based on testimo-
ny during the appeals hearings
from former 22nd District Court
Judge Sylvia James, the charges
were reinstated against Greene.
James testified that Greene told
her he used the city attorney's
computer and printed the memo
which he then supplied to Wade
who gave it to the plaintiff, Lt.
KevinSmith.
Smith's attorney said at the
time that he refused to read the
document and that it was never a
factor in his pleadings or argu-
ments before the court in Smith's
case.
A forensic examination of
Greene's court computer showed
the person using the machine
logged on using his name and
accessed the city attorney's email
account and printed several doc-
uments.
Greene claimed that he was
not in the courtroom at the time
the action took place but had left
the building to attend a veteran's
groupmeeting inGardenCity.
Wade was also charged in the
incident as a co-defendant. He
entered a no-contest plea to will-
ful neglect of duty of a public
office and was sentenced to one
day, time served in 2013. Both
men were fired from their posts
as court officers by James when
the original charges were filed in
2010.
Greene served as an Inkster
City Councilman from 2007-2009
when he resigned to help care
for his wife who suffers from
multiple sclerosis.

mate sacrifice in the line of duty

The event is named for
Westland Firefighter Brian
Woehlke who lost his life to a
restaurant fire last year.

Organizers of the event are
still seeking sponsors at three
separate sponsorship levels.
With the $7,500 Platinum level,
the donor will receive the event
sponsor title, a $3,000 radio cam-
paign, branding for the event,
publicity and 100 tickets to the
event. There is only one
Platinumsponsorship available.
The $5,000 Gold sponsorship
includes branding, publicity, a
banner at the event and 75 tick-
ets to the event.
This sponsorship level is also
limited to one.
ASilver sponsorship of $2,500
will include publicity, a banner
and 50 event tickets.
The $1,000 Bronze sponsor-
ship includes publicity and 25
event tickets.

Westland City Council mem-
bers unanimously adopted the
recently ratifiedU.A.W. Local 174
union contract for front line
supervisors during a regular
meeting earlier this month. With
a goal of reducing “legacy costs”
in the city, the four-year agree-
ment provides for reducedwages
and benefits for new hires,
reductions in some benefits for
current employees including
tuition reimbursement and over-
time, and employee cost sharing
towardpensions andhealthcare.
The agreement requires all
employees to contribute 5 per-
cent toward their pensions and
cost sharing approximately 20
percent for healthcare premi-
ums. The contract provides for 4
percent inwage increases during
the four year agreement. New
hires will receive a reduced ben-
efit pension but no healthcare in
retirement. At age 65, current
employees will receive a Health
Retirement Account, an annual
cash stipend to purchase
Medicare supplemental cover-
age. These benefit changes are
expected to reduce the city
“Other Post Employment
Benefit” (OPEB) and pension lia-
bilities, positively impact the
municipal financial statements
and credit rating, and reduce
future expenses to the city.
“As front-line supervisors, we
depend upon these hard-working
employees for supervising staff
and ensuring policy and proce-
dures are followed when deliver-
ing vital services. These employ-
ees recognize the city's need to
effectively manage finances,
including addressing long-term
liabilities;” commented Mayor
BillWild.
Ted Williams, president of
Local 174, said, “We are pleased
to reach settlement on a newcon-
tract that provides for pay
increases, and we realize that
contributing toward pension and
healthcare costs helps the city.”
Wild said, “Currently, myself,
all directors, non-union,
AFSCME and WPOAM employ-
ees along with the clerk, deputy
clerk and approximately 160
employees, now contribute
toward their retirement and
healthcare costs. The city is in
talks with our fire union and will
soon begin negotiating with
police command officers.
“The city's goal is consistency
in wages and benefits among our
various employee groups and
achieving new contracts that
help stabilize finances and
reduce legacy costs by eliminat-
ing retirement health care bene-
fits and reforming costly pension
packages,”Wild concluded.
