McCarter said this was a first for the Concours D'Elegance and that many of the owners were looking forward to showing off their cars on the track.
An auction of about 70 classic cars, including a 1932 Packard Twin Six custom convertible sedan which once belonged to
singer Al Jolson, appraised at $950- $1,150,000, will take place on Saturday in the main ballroom at St. John's in conjunction with the Concours D'Elegance. Also to be auctioned is America's first transparent car, a 1939 Pontiac Plexiglas Deluxe Six Ghost Car, which has a body built of acrylic. It was a highlight of the New York World's Fair in 1939-40. The vehicle is valued at $275,000- $475,000. Admission requirements are avail-able at www.concoursusa.org.
“This is the pinnacle. This is the top,” one exhibitor said.
“You simply do not see finer automobiles than at this show. It's part art, part history,” he said.

said. Try to go to a public building with air conditioning eachday for several hours. Other suggestions included wearing light-colored clothing to reflect away some of the sun's energy and drinking plenty of water and fluids. Water is the safest liquid to drink during heat emergencies. Avoid drinks with alcohol or caffeine in them. They can make you feel good briefly, but make the heat's effects on your body worse.
Signals of heat emergencies include having cool, moist, pale, or flushed skin; heavy sweating; headache; nausea or vom-iting; dizziness; and exhaustion. While the victims body temperaturewill be near nor-mal, these are all indications of heat exhaustion.
The symptoms of heat stroke include hot, red skin; changes in consciousness; rapid, weak pulse and rapid, shallow breathing. The person's body temperature canbe as high as 105 degrees. If the person
was sweating fromheavy work or exercise, skinmay bewet; otherwise, it will feel dry. Treatment for all the symptoms includes getting out of the sun and heat, drinking water and cooling the body. If the symptoms are severe, indicating heat stroke, call 9-1-1.
Kevin Hatman of the Michigan Humane Society also cautioned owners about the serious danger the high temper-atures pose to pets.
He suggested that pets be keep indoors during these “dog days” and never, ever be left inside a car for any amount of time. He also said owners need to be diligent in see-ing that fresh, cool water is available at all times for animals.
He said that tethering a dog outside or vigorous exercise presents a real danger to pets of all ages in the heat.
First aid for dogs who succumb to the heat includes submersing the animal in cool water to or pouring cool water over the pet while out of the sun.
“Immediately call a veterinarian,” Hatman said. More information about pet health is available at www.michiganhu-mane.org or 1-866-648-6263.
