Devin Adams, controller for
the City of Westland, is looking
forward to his new duties as
president of the Westland
RotaryClub for 2018-19.
Adams noted that the stan-
dards for the job were set pretty
highby his predecessor.
“She did a great job and I def-
initely have some big shoes to
fill,” he said of outgoing presi-
dent Maria Mitter, a Wayne-
Westland school staffmember.
Adams also told Mitter than
withhis installation, she became
the “second youngest” club pres-
ident.
Adams thanked his fiancee,
his mother and his City of
Westland colleagues for support,
along with the Westland Rotary
members, “and especially Dick
Isham, whowe all call Chief.”
Adams noted of Rotarians,
“They all pretty much created
the blueprint for success,” and
followed the Rotary creed of
ServiceAboveSelf.
Adams vowed to reach out to
those in need during his year as
president, saying, “I've always
had a strong family foundation.”
Local chiropractor Dr.
Amanda Apfelblat was lauded
as an honorary Rotarian for her
extensive community involve-
ment, particularly in Westland
andWayne.
“The Rotary has meant so
much to me. You are always
there,” saidApfelblat.
Mitter gave the Service
Above Self award to longtime
Westland Rotarian Jeff
Juenemann.
“He exemplifies Rotary. Mr.
Juenemann, this award is for
you.”
Mary McGaw of Rotary gar-
nered the Rotarian of the Year
award, withMitter noting, “Mary
has been a great champion.”
In installing officers and
directors, Assistant District
Governor Jerry Richardson
said, “This is one of the things I
really enjoy doing. It's exciting.
Each president offers their own
unique perspective.”
Richardson, who belongs to
the Rotary Club of Belleville,
gave Adams a president's pin
and club flag.
“Fly that with pride and great
gusto,” he said. Richardson told
the other club leaders, “You all
got sworn in because it's a big
responsibility. Anybody who's
coming innow is standing on the
shoulders of giants.”
Joining Adams as officers for
the coming Westland Rotary
year are: John Albrecht, presi-
dent-elect; Isham, treasurer/sec-
retary; Mitter as past president
and Margaret Harlow, Kathleen
Johnson, Mary McGaw, Paul
Motz, Kristi Nimsgern, Don
Oesterwind,
and
Mary
Vellardita, directors.
Westland Rotary meets at
12:15 p.m. Thursdays at Joy
Manor, on the south side of Joy
Road east of Middlebelt Road in
