weight airframe and powerful General Electric engine generating 31,000 pounds of thrust, the F-16CJ can fly at speeds in excess ofMach 2, the spokesman added.

In celebration of the Navy's Centennial of Aviation, Thunder Over Michigan will show-case more than two dozen F/A-18 Hornets from across the country. The Boeing F/A-18 is a twin-engine carrier-based fighter air-craft that is currently flownby theU.S. Navy. Also featured this year is a realistic air and ground reenactment of a World War II Pacific-theatre battle featuring a live flamethrower. Spectators will see three LVT's transporting U.S. Marines to the front lines of battle in order tomaneuver a ground assault on the Japanese emplacements. Simultaneously, two Japanese Zeros will be flying cover for the Japanese troops while six U.S Navy Corsairs enter the theater and engage the two enemy aircraft in multiple aerial dogfights.

Other show highlights include: an aerial dogfight between two legendary Vietnam War military aircrafts, the A-4 Skyhawk and a MIG-17; plus, crowds will be able to see on display and take a tour of a MV-22 Osprey. Part airplane and part helicopter, this air-craft has revolutionized military air trans-port capabilities. The MV-22 Osprey is an American multi-mission aircraft that com-bines the vertical flight capabilities and functionality of a helicopter with the speed and range of an airplane. No other aircraft can do what the MV-22 does, which is why it is considered to be the weapon of choice for the full spectrum of combat, the spokesman noted.

Tickets are $25 per adult for purchases made until noon on July 24. Children 15 years and younger are admitted at no cost. Tickets at the gate are $30 for adults and parking will be increased from the $5 advance parking ticket fee to $10. Tickets are available at www.yankeeairmuseum. org/air-show or charge by phone at (888) 695-0888. Show proceeds benefit the Yankee Air Museum

erty that is potentially suitable for bioenergy cropping. The airport authority has leased to 3 acres of airport-owned land to the universi-ty extension service on which biofuel crops have been planted and will soon be harvest-ed, refined, and tested. The crops planted include canola and oriental mustard seed. The extension service will be responsible for the overall management of the project grant, while the airport authority will provide access to and use of acreage at its airports for a portion of the project.

In addition to airport property, the grant also includes bioenergy sites on other types of landnot traditionally used for crops. “This grant provides Michigan an oppor-tunity to transition into the green energy sec-tor with the potential to reduce our depend-ence on foreign oil imports and create need-ed jobs,” said MSU Extension Project Manager Dennis Pennington. Pennington also expects that through this project will be able to determine the economic impact of growing, refining, storing, and transporting

the biomass as a “drop in” fuel alternative (compatiblewith existing fuel systems). Once refined, biodiesel can be dropped in current fuel tank farms at the airports with-out modification to the fuel system in any way. Aprocessing plant could be constructed on or near the airport. The locally grown bio-fuel crops can then be harvested, transported to the refinery, and piped directly into the onsite airport fuel tanks. Current accessibili-ty to rail lines and expressways also make it feasible to transport the product to other facilities, Penningtonnoted.

“Wayne County EDGE and Aerotropolis Development Corp. have identified alterna-tive energy and non-fossil fuels as a growth sector for our area,” said Wayne County Executive Robert A. Ficano. “Through this project, Wayne Countywill be at the forefront of an exciting, emerging, technology that could generate significant economic benefits for the region and state.”

To ensure the integrity of the project, a stakeholders group was formed and met in January to promote the use of biodiesel and jet fuel as an alternative fuel for aircraft and support equipment at the airports.

The project is expected to be complete by February 2012.
