Heights, Whitney-Knoll and LegacyEstates.

The yards were spectacular with each one having something different. There were koi ponds, waterfalls, fountains and the main show were the beautiful flowers. This year we added ven-dors. Jean Gorring sold gorgeous glass lawn ornaments, beautiful-ly painted gourds made into bird houses, bowls, and vases were sold by Jane Vladu. Garden Fantasy from Belleville sold plants, flowers, and yard decora-tions - what garden doesn't need onemore?

Very successful was the white elephant table. Club members donated slightly used garden

related items with all proceeds going to the club. The weather was just perfect for approximate-ly 140who attended.

The Wayne Garden Club was founded 1916. We are members of the National Council of State and Garden Clubs, Inc. and the Federated Garden Clubs of Michigan, Inc. It is our purpose to promote gardening, conservation, and beautification in the Wayne area. The committee members were Pam Tucker, Jane Vladu, Diana Mach, Mary Lindsay, Rita Mach. Liz Marnon, Leora Smith, Jo Ann Hanson, Christine Blinn, LynnHiggs andRuthWenzel. A special thank you to club members who worked very hard to make this a wonderful day in the gardens ofWayne.

RuthWenzel,

Wayne

did somany others, was only a frac-tion of what unnerved me about our interview and this presenta-tion. See, this is a man who gradu-ated fromhigh school and carefully and thoughtfully chose a life in a religious community. He left his home and his family and went into a Trappist Monastery to pursue a life of devotion and service to oth-ers.

Not exactly the macho warrior type, eh?

Yeah, that'swhat I thought, too. Medical science being what it was half a century ago, his allergies couldn't be controlled and he had to leave the monastery and seek another life for himself. Can you imagine what that must have been like for a personwho was willing to separate himself from the world to lead a religious life?

Fighting in Korea had erupted and he opted to join the Army, where the rest of his story unfold-ed. The courage that must have taken amazesme.

Part of Dowel's heroism, I think, is in his quiet dignity. He was, in many ways, reluctant to talk about the uglier side of what he saw and experienced.

There was no ego in our conver-sation, he didn't brag about his service, and he certainly wasn't embroidering his exploits or

attempting to impress anyone. He did what he believed he had to do to serve his country and his fellow Americans. And right now, there are thousands more like him offering their very best every day in foreign countries like Afghanistan, Iraq, and throughout the world, to protect this country. While many may disagree with the politics of those who sent them there to begin with, no one can deny that these are the peoplewho each gave up or radically changed their lives to face death on a daily basis in the service of their country.

I just don't want to be one of those people who takes them for granted. I don't want to become inured to what they have given up to be there and what they give up every day to stay there and stay alive.

I'll readily admit to my lack of tolerance or patience when some blowhards begin their bragging about their war experiences and want to expound at the top of their lungs about their heroics and how many lives they took. I usually find the quickest exit.

It'smen likeDowel, and somany others, who don't talk about their experiences without prodding and then with reluctance and sadness, who speak to my heart. These are the guys who really did the job that needed done, quietly, usually des-perately and with more heroism and strength of character than the braggarts could imagine.

I haven't seen or heard anybody from SEAL Team Six bragging about the job they had to do, and I sure haven't seen them on any talk shows inflating their own egos. I suspect that's because the real heroes, like Dowel and the SEALs and so many others whose boots are on the ground, are the ones who have too much respect for the job they do, the country they pro-tect and the people they love, to cheapen their service by turning it into entertainment or fodder for their own self-aggrandizement. After talking with Dowel, and hearing his story, I will never look at any military serviceman or woman the sameway.

Thanks to him, I now know a herowhen I see one.

had.

Wilson deserves a vote of thanks from every member of the commu-nity for the dedication, the effort and the tireless pursuit of excel-lence and preservation with which she pursued her work at the muse-um. Whether it was preserving the past or teaching children how a

quilt was made by hand, she had an eye on the past and on the future.

Wilson says she is going to remain in the community to spend time with her family, which is won-derful news.

Because, that's the way she thinks of just about everybody in the area. After all, she's been taking care of their records for 15 years and knows more about their ances-tors thanmany do themselves. We thank her and we wish her well.
